Hey all, gonna do the 1st oil change today. How do I reset the oil life even though the light hasn't come on yet. Do you still do the same routine? Thanks

Emerick if you have the steering wheel controls you can just hold down the arrow looking button when it's on oil life and it will reset.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Dragon, I was just going to ask that question!! My buddy said make sure you get the steering wheel controls--now I know why! I changed my oil and filter at 850miles and never reset it--it is at 2,600 and still says like 76%! I am going to change everything at 5000. Dealer wanted me to bring it in at 5000 for oil change for $60--hell I can change it for $25 and do all the other stuff for $60. My last truck they said first oil change was free--so I took time out of my busy schedule and brought it in--they said it would be about two hours--I got in my truck and never went back! Plan on doing it with this one.

Hi redneck45,

The steering wheel controls sure do make life easier for resetting the info in the DIChttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Your right about the 76 % life it seems the oil change reminder can go 10,000 miles before it will say anything. I think its tied into hours used and speeds driven so it will vary with usage. But its awfully optomistic.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Might I suggest that you change your oil again now at 2,600 miles. It seems to be a popular belief, and I agree that a few oil changes on a brand new Duramax is a good idea to help flush out all the sand thats used for the molds that they use to pour the engines castings with. Then you can do another at 5,000 and then what ever suits your fancy. Me personally I like 3,000 miles changes after the first few initial ones. Oil and filters are cheap compared to a engine rebuild. Yes theres warannty but I plan to keep mine a lot longer than 100,000 miles.

And dont forget all the other fluids while your under the truck along with greasing the front end.

Some people have written that they had problems with some dealers for warranty work because there was no "proof" that the oil was ever changed. So I keep all my oil and filter reciepts in a folder along with a log book of when the fluids were changed. And that should suffice for proof to any dealer or in any court if it ever comes to it.
