Hello, a question for those who have installed a Hi-capacity trans pan such as the Mag-Hytec or PML product, did it help to lower the trans temps, how much, and was the benefit worth the investment? Thanks in advance,

Any time you can add 4 qt's of extra fluid is good. GM uses a deep pan on their commercial Allison applications, must mean something. I don't think you will drop temps a significant amount, maybe not at all, but it is good insurance not to mention the cool factor.

if you're looking for more capacity it's a good investment, but I wouldn't buy one if you are just looking for cooler sump temps

Temps will rise the same ,no help there ...Although I do believe the Aluminum if anything will shed the heat faster once rolling and temps will drop ....

We will see as summer approachs .... I found with the Allison Deep Pan once the temps got up to 200 they stayed there, never fluctuating much ....

Give a guy some hope ,we ya .... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

If you think about it, a hard launch will try to raise your tranny temp quickly. What would take longer to raise the temp, stock capacity or extra?

Or put it this way...

It's more difficult to change the temp of a larger body of fluid so fluid temp will be more stable.

When I say temps HOOT I mean they will rise nontheless...No way will the added fluid STOP the temp from rising ... It is possible that in STOCK condition the temps may rise a little slower but in the summer, forgetabout it .... Couple quarts mean nuttin when temps are the goal ...

Me thinks the Aluminum will just shed the heat quicker .... My sump temp seems to drop sooner then IC gauge ... The IC gauge is tight to the valve body creating residue heat readings ....I wonder what the winter will bring ,may need a pan heater ....

My sump gauge is very near the bottom of the pan now also ,where as before it was near mid pan ....

Time will tell once it heats up around here ...

Oh I agree with you 100% MAC. When she's up to temp she's up to temp whether she's got 1 gallon or 5 gallons.

But if you really thrash it, it's harder to elevate the larger quantity, quickly.

When transmisiion fluid comes out of the torque converter it is at its hottest temp. Fluid is over 300F and it goes into the cooler from there,(it must or you would not have a trans). After that passage it is dumped into the sump. Fluid might have shed 75 Deg post cooler when it is dumped. So, we will say fluid is 225F when dumped(as an example). Assuming return fluid is 225F, sump temp will be 175F(approximate). How fast do you think you will drop temps with mixture of return fluid and sump fluid?(even with 4 extra quarts). Aluminum pan does not catch enough air flow to help much. I just got done trying to drop trans temps in a 4L80E and finally succeeded by doubleing the outside cooler size. Factory cooler on this truck was a Long 6X11 one and a half inch thick. I replaced with a Long 12X12 one and a half inch thick and dropped temps 20 Deg. Deep sump pan did not help this truck 1 Deg. according to my Tech 1 Vetronix scanner.

Has anyone living in a hot climate installed a second oil cooler? Is a larger one available for our trucks?

I am doing research on a larger cooler. I know they are available but there is too much b/s in working with the trans lines. I just ordered the new Ford cooler for the 5R110. I have been told it is a monster with large fittings (unlike other coolers with three eighths fittings that you neck up and restict flow). It is pricy to say the least.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif I have been told on good authority that it drops temps dramaticaly. I will see how this puppy looks and if i like it i will try and do a simple install and give a report.

Someone needs to Pioneer a new cooler, good luck Mike keep us on the need to know list .... The one provided by GM is way to small for us Hot Rodders ....

Anyone look at the big rigs running Eatons and Allisons for a retro fit ??

Even if it's a Ferd? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Joe says this thing kicks reall butt on temps. Don't think he has tried it on an Ally. At the price, i am expecting certain sexual pleasures on delivery (better be a girl delivery person)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif

Has anyone tried using an electric radiator fan? I have a spare 12" with thermostat. I wonder if it would help with temps in bumper to bumper traffic?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

The electric fan is a good idea. Make sure you set it at the lowest setting so it comes on before trans fluid begins to get hot. They don't play catch-up very well.
