: Damn OEM Oil Filter!
Rollin' Thunder 04-16-2004, 12:29 AM 600 miles on new GMC. Decided to change oil and filter today before departing in 2 days on 5,000 mile trip to pick up new fifth wheel.
Well....despite having both an oil filter strap wrench and a graphite "cup" wrench, I could not BUDGE the filter. They must put that sucker on with a 2 foot long breaker bar. When I started to crush the filter with the strap wrench I decided I'd better drive it to the dealer. They put it up on the rack and loosened it for me.
There must be some line worker grinning like crazy every time he tightens one up....
Mackin 04-16-2004, 06:20 AM They all do it ....
I have to figure that with vibration they self tighten .... I rip the gasket off every time ....

Dura_Mike 04-16-2004, 10:37 AM When I changed my oil for the first time at just over 500 miles, I had a similar problem with removing the oil filter. The metal band on my filter wrench really crushed the filter. I ended up driving a large phillips screw driver completely through the end of the filter. With the screw driver in place, I had the leverage to remove the filter.
I hope removing the fuel filter for the first time is a little easier to do.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Frank Blum 04-17-2004, 12:13 AM Don't put them on so tight. Later! Frank
nassdmax 04-17-2004, 08:27 AM When you put them on, put a shot of silicone spray or silicone grease on the gasket. I always have done this on any motor for years, and when I go to change the next time, I can still get the filter off by hand!
HTH
I think nassdmax is right....
I've used something called DC-4 (Dow Corning #4 compound) on filters for years. Discovered it when I started working on aircraft at the first shop I worked in. The oil filters on small aircraft piston engines can be hard to get at and have a 1" socket size nut formed on the end of them, If they get locked up on the mount, well...
Anyway, I'm not sure exactly what's in the DC-4, but it reminds me of silicone grease and it works really well.
Kendall69 04-17-2004, 01:02 PM You gotts get that strap filter remover. I got that tip from this site, and it worked like a charm came off instantly and quickly, and yes, i notice it was damn near glued on.Edited by: Kendall69
Hit Man X 04-18-2004, 10:50 PM That's why I change my own fluids now. I learned that most places don't give a crap about your vehicle the way you do. I had to take one of my 18" screwdrivers and put it through a filter on a vehicle I used to own to remove it.
Now, I fill the filter (so there's oil pressure on start up) before install as well as lube the seal on all oil changes. I always tighten the filter by hand all the way down + ~1/4 turn.
bajadave 04-22-2004, 07:54 AM Where can I find this oil filter strap wrench? Can you show us a picture? Thank you very much for all the great information. I'm due to change mine very soon, like right now.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I think this is one that's supposed to work good, sorry I lost the part number but you might get lucky by showing the parts guy the picture.

I have one of the Lisles:

I use it for fuel filter changes - works great! Even when the filter housing is slick with spilled fuel!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
bajadave 04-23-2004, 03:37 AM Thanks guys! just what the doctored order.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
redneck45 04-24-2004, 09:37 AM My stock filter was way tight, but a cap style wrench I had in my toolbox fit it (hadn't used it since my '79 trans am), anyway I changed it a 850 miles, then again last night at 3,200 miles. That 2232 was tighter than the original filter and I turned it 1/2 after gasket contact! Stripped the 1/2 drive out of the wrench and had to put a screw driver through it! This time tightened it 1/4 turn past gasket contact--these things must tighten themselves!
Bill Gisse 04-24-2004, 07:26 PM Its not the filter, its the oil pressure distorting the filter( Just my guess).
