I have a question about a 1982 6.2L chevy diesel. Has 100,000mi. on it. When we go out to start it after it sitting over night or couple of days, it takes a few minutes of cranking and cycling the glow plugs for it to start. But once it starts it runs great. Then when we shut it off it wont start, even after letting it sat a few hours. We've bleed the air out of the fuel lines at the injectors. We think it might be the starter but were not sure, cause its taking alot of power away from the batteries all of a sudden.

One other thing with the truck is the tranny. When it shifts it shifts at high rpm and it shifts real hard. Any ideas??

thanks

Good possibility it's a combination of things - low batterys, worn starter bushings for slow crank hard start; mechanical lift pump, fuel filter for fuel drain-back hard start.

These Diesels will hard-start at low\slow cranking speeds - the inj pump cannot build enough pressure to pop the injectors.

If you have not, try reading the other no-start\hard-start posts here for more info.

You did not specify which trans you have - if it's the T350 or T400 3-speed check the vacuum system; if it's the 700R4 4-speed overdrive, the throttle cable linkage may require adjustment.

Post your findings....Edited by: gmctd

We havent had a chance to check it and see if theres anything wrong with the starter or pump but we are going to try replacing the batteries when we get a chance. Oh and the transmission is a T400.

vacuum modulator or vacuum pump, does the cruise control work?, or do all the vent does switch like they are suppose to, like going from vent to floor, or defrost, or are they stuck in one position.

My vote is for the starter. Hot start problems are real common, it's a GM

What do the vacuum pump or modulator have to do with starting, the vent controls, and the cruise control? I have several of those problems and now the truck won't start. I'm most familiar with 5.0L Ford motors--GMs and diesels are new to me...

A few months my dad gave me his '85 Blazer with the 6.2L. It's got 250K miles on it and ran fine until this week. It has been hard starting since I got it--in the morning or when it was cold it took 5-10 seconds of cranking before finally firing up, then I had to give it gas until the engine was warm and it would keep running at idle instead of dying right away. When it was warm outside or after the truck had been running, it would fire right up. It was modified for manual glow plug operation years ago... The vent controls don't work right, and the cruise control works, but not well--it surges. It has two new batteries which I've drained trying to get the thing to start for the last few days. Yesterday morning it wouldn't start at all, but in the afternoon when it was 90+ degrees outside, it fired up easily. This morning it wouldn't start again, and now it won't start even though it's 90 degrees outside... Help!
