I am looking to buy a GM Scan tool leaning towards a Tech 2 but will probably start with a Tech1 intitially to help with my recently out of "extended warranty" 6.5.


Which cartridge do I need to have, for the tech1 to work on this engine. Is there an adaptor cable and/or program needed to display all the data, on a laptop screen.
Also if anyone is interested let me know the proper etiquette (since I am new) and procedure for adding pictures. I have recently "depotted" a PMD and you can easily see all the circuitry inside.

The Tech 1 will work fine on that as its OBD-I. The Tech 1 will give you all the info a tech 2 will give you with OBD 1. I am sure they can be found much cheaper too.

From what you are saying the Tech 1 shouold just plug in, and with following the prompts, and pushing the appropriate buttons (Will I also need the manuel- if so which one??), I will be able to check or set up the timing on a new IP, as well as testing for other engine functions.

The reason I assumed there may be a special cartridge for the 6.5, is every scanner I am looking at "requires" or comes with different plugin modules or cords for different applications.
I have looked at and searched through th 6.5 forum and there does not seem to be a good explanation of what is needed (that I can find anyway), except that the snapon scanner and other scantools results are not as accurate as a tech 1 or tech 2 would show on the same engine.

The Tech-xx series was designed to GM\Stanadyne specs.

Tech-I is dead-ended at 1995 - it is for OBD-I only

Tech-II is OBD-II, is OBD-I compatible, and operating system software is continually upgradeable to DMax and later.

Somebody wants to give you a Tech-I, grab it.

Other-wise, spring for the Tech-II

IMO, of course, as a matter of factual opinion........................

The tech I will work on ODB II but you need the cartrige for ODB II as well as the software for the vehicles.
