I havent driven one but I've heard mixed reviews. I've heard that its slightly sluggish and has a bit of a drone in the back seat. Ive heard this from a few people and these people probably never drove a diesel before. I think the fuel mileage comes out to about 4 or 5 more mpg than the v6, which is pretty nice. I really wanted one but the liberty was just too small for me, Thats the only reason I didnt get one. If the liberty was a little bigger that'd be sitting in my yard instead of my dmax.

I have one and like it alot. I also have a 99 and an 02 Dodge CTD. So I have a lot to compare it to. It has a lot of pep and as much as I hate the Variable vane turbos I have to say it responds pretty well. Just don't stomp on it off the line because it has fallen on it's face a few times when I did that. 2 things you should know about before you buy it that I didn't know when I bought mine. 1. It has a timing belt. Not a chain or a gear. I didn't know this until I bought the manuel and started browsing through it. It calls for changing it at 100 k miles so it's not as bad as what they have done with gassers at 30 k intervals, but to me it's a stupid idea. If that thing ever goes is curtains for sure. Second, and not such a big deal but still. It has a pcv valve that vents into the intake right in front of the turbo. I discovered this little ditty at my first oil change when I say oil running out of the turbo onto the block. Chrysler says its normal. But I say it stinks. So I disconnected the tube, plugged the intake hole and vented it to the ground like my Cummins does. THis makes a nice oil spot on the ground where I park so, at my next spare time, I will be designing a catcher for the oil. Not sure if this is a good thing that it has enough blow by to drip oil already or if it just where they vent it from that is the problem but my Dodge didn't start dripping oil until about 85k miles. And still not as much. Also has a Cat and EGR, dumb, dumb, dumb. All this will be ...... well let's just say, delt with..... in the near future when I start bombing it. :grd:I hear that there are chips that will crank it up enought to slip the torque converter if you want more HP. BTW. On the road if you keep an average of 70mph, you can squeeze 25mpg out of it. Around town about 16 to 18. I"d say that's not bad. And even though I complain about a few things, I still like it alot. :):)

I'm currently in arbitration with Chrysler to get them to take mine back. I have less than 5000 miles and has been in the repair shop 6 times. The last of which, they said there was a TSB update for the computer and when I went to pick it up, it was fried. Yet the repair order said that the TSB update would not be availalbe until 6/5/06. My suggestion and opinion is to avoid it like the plague.

Thanks to all for the info. ROCKIN C RACING, man you have me nervous as hell. I'm goining to pick up the Jeep this morning.:( I love the Tahoe, but I hate the 15 MPG. It is my wife's daily driver and just doesn't seem practical. I don't see gas prices going down anytime soon, if ever, so with the CRD the only diesel suv out there I guess I will take a chance. Maybe in a year or so GM will get off thier lazy asses and start building what America needs. I havent given up on American products yet. I hope GM takes a long hard look at the Jeep CRD and comes up with something better, I know they can.:grd:

Be warned that they have EGR issues. I've had more than just EGR problems. Mine has also only been getting 17-18 mpg in town and 22 on the highway. Not that much better than a Tahoe and a Tahoe has much more room. I agree, dying for a diesel SUV by GM.

Have you thought about keeping the Tahoe and installing a Cummins?
I would hate to give up the space of the Tahoe, just for the Jeep diesel.

I'm going to do a 99 Tahoe CTD soon.

Thanks

CREWCAB59, When you get the cummins in the tahoe, send the how to's to GM. I bought the Jeep yesterday, seems like a nice vehicle. It has no odor or diesel smell when running, has lots of power, all I can say is I hope I have a good one.

Regarding the timing belt, that engine is made with rocker arms that are made to break if the belt breaks. Since it is an interference engine, this will keep it from breaking valves and pistons.

Well thank God for that. I still think that it should be mandatory to disclose the fact that it has a belt though, instead of a gear. Not that anyone asked me!!!;);) I can't complain too much though. Overall it is performing quite well. I did take it to the track last fall to see if I could get a baseline time before I start doing mods, and I didn't put it in 4wd. She spun the rear tires so bad I couldn't stop laughing. Never did get a second try as I had to get home. :grd:
