A customer of mine is looking for some type of ramp or lift to load his Harley in to the bed of his truck to avoid pulling a 27ft trailer for just one bike. Any ideas or pics would be great.

Thanks

If it is as tall as yours, you may want to hire a crane!

I have a telescoping plastic ramp I have used for a few years. It has just enough arc to make it easier to clear low bikes. It is rated at 750 lbs and is easy to transport.

Make sure you install a pingle mount or equivalent in the bed of the truck. Don’t rely on the straps holding it up against the front of the bed. When the wheel twists, you are going to have problems.

The other problem is hauling one in a short bed truck. When the rear wheel rests on the tailgate, it can actually bend the tailgate. I have seen guys use various methods to prevent this from a sheet of plywood, a 2x12, and a u-shaped rail made of 14 gauge metal the length of the bike. Also expect a few extra chips in the paint of the tailgate running it in the down position for any length of time. Depending on the bike you might be able load it diagonal with the pingle mount, slide the rear over and close the gate.

Or Buy a smaller trailer! http://dsdd.com/Trailer/pages/9_JPG.htm

I have now re-configured this one to haul 1, 2, or 3 by relocating the pingle mounts and quick release tiedowns.

I dont know the weight of Harleys, but I'd be leary resting the ramps or the back wheel on the tailgate give all the tailgate problems.

Good point, VRSTRAPS!!!!!

The problem with VRSTRAPs is that it does not reinforce the point where it attaches to the bed. While the VRSTRAP wont break like the cables, the bed wall will still bend.

Check these out; they're expensive, but worth it. Make sure that you get a ramp long enough to keep the Harley from "bottoming" out. Most 4x4 trucks need a ramp 8-10ft long. These fold in half.

Voodoo, check out http://www.readyramp.com/atv_ramp.html I use these for my bikes and ATV's. If you call them ask for Cord, he got me hooked up and was great to deal with. I have attached a pic of this system on a S-10 we just built.

I wouldn't worry about the tailgate, my dad's Bombardier Quest 650XT weighs about 1100lbs full of fluids and him on it. The tailgate worked fine on several occasions of loading and unloading.

I have a trailer that I will sell him cheap, it is a 3 rail but can carry just one bike if he likes. Let me know. $400 for the trailer. wood deck, new rims and tires and lights.

He has one but thanks for the offer. He has more than enough trailers for his 30+ bikes, he just wants to avoid pulling any trailer for one bike, mainly because of parking in the congested bike shows he goes to.

Don't know if you are still looking for ramps. I just bought these on Ebay for running dirt bikes up into my truck. They are great and pretty cheap. Rated to 750lbs per ramp.
