: engine replaced and air bag/steering column issue

Five or six weeks back I posted a question regarding my 2002 Silverado with only 23,000 miles. Turns out a value broke and GM replaced the engine which was still under warrantee.

I’ve had it back for 2 weeks now and have a question. Would replacing the engine require them to disconnect the air bag in any way or remove or somehow manipulate the steering column?

The air bag light came on the day after I got the car back and I’ve been hearing a scrapping noise in the steering column and I can see that there is some sort of sticker that is hanging in the column and scrapping as the steering wheel turns.

I’ve called the dealer and he said he can’t say for sure if they would have done anything with the steering or airbag, but I would need to bring it in.

Before I do that I’d like to see if in fact it would be normal for them to work on either of these items while replacing the engine.

Thanks for the assistance

We didn't have anything like that when our engine was replaced, FWIW.

bad clockspring, I guarentee it ;)

Does the horn still work? The clockspring is a bunch of wires that are wound around the steering wheel a bunch of times so you can get power to things on teh steering wheel and still be able to turn the wheel. Every vehicle with a driver side airbag has one, and vehicles with steering wheel controls have even more complicated clocksprings. Yours is most likely broken, so the driver side airbag is basically disconnected. The SIR SDM (supplemental inflatable restraint sensory diagnostic module, wow what a mouthful!) senses that there is an open circuit in the driver side inflator module (because the clockspring is broken and therefore the airbag is disconnected), and thus freaks out and turns on the airbag light.

Have the dealer fix it. They most likely removed the steering intermediate shaft to replace the engine and probably in the not so careful ways that dealers tend to do, broke the clock spring.

btw get it fixed ASAP because your airbags wont work until you get it fixed.

I remember a warning sticker on the intermidiate shaft, saying something like "Warning, prevent steering wheel from spinning if intermidiate shaft is removed, or damage may result".

yep...spinning the steering wheel round and round with the shaft disconnected will do your clockspring in :(

Mar10a,
I found your post regarding your engine was shot after 23,000 miles, did you get a extended warrantee with the new engine? What did GM do to take care of you?? I was not very happy to see that, I have a 2002 with 34,500 miles, and still crossing my fingers!!!

I hate to say it, but if they replaced an entire engine, they would have had to disconnect everything, and since they did any of that work, you would have to bring it back to them, it could be anything around what was repaired in the engine replacement.

They replaced the engine and I paid the $100 deductible. Took 5 weeks however. This pickup is a 2nd veh which I drive very little so I turned down the loaner they offered, but wish now I had haggled for the deductible- 5 weeks of a loaner is worth much more than that.

you were too nice in turning down the loaner.

Try to get the stealer to do something for you for the 100 deductable, could be as easy as a oil change, filter, at least something, don't give in, and don't be so nice! Heck the engine didn't even make it to 25,000 miles.....

They were lucky that did not happen to me, I would have blown my own fore' head gasket after an engine goes with 23,000 miles....

Hope they figure this out and take care of you....
