: Electric Step
compression67 04-17-2006, 11:28 PM Who has tried the Amp Research electric step? I'm liking the fact you get a 12" step and they fold away for a clean look. Nerf bars don't go down low enough so my little ones can get in(wife's 5'3" too).
Anybody like them or dislike them? 900 bucks plus shipping is alot to try'em and see if ya like'em.
I've tried searching for threads but keep coming up empty.
Thanks!
I love em! Check my garage for pics. My wife is 5'1 and has no problem getting in as long as she is not wearing a tight skirt....
SteelMastiff 04-18-2006, 07:17 AM I thought they were $1,000.00 a piece? If am am wrong please tell me so!!! I am looking at them also!!!
DINO ONE 04-18-2006, 09:35 AM $1000 for the set with everything you need to install. I have them also one of the best mods I ever put on my truck....:ro) :ro)

neversatisfiedmoto 04-18-2006, 06:28 PM very nice step but not ment to be in lots of mud and grim other then that a great step.:grd:
ickman99 04-19-2006, 10:00 AM One of the best purchases you'll make. I got them when I put my lift on and they are great. They extend lower than normal running boards or nerf bars so its easier to get into with them. My wife said I don't care what you do to the truck just put those electric steps on. Best money I ever spent IMO.
B-rad 04-19-2006, 11:06 AM where did you find them for $900?
yankeeland 04-19-2006, 12:39 PM I just had them installed on my truck, best upgrade yet.
Had the Nerf bars (they look good) but where too close to the truck.
My wife's been giving me a hard time for putting alot of money in the
truck too soon, but with Amp nothing but compliments.
Will post pics soon, haven't decided if I should wait for my lift before
showing it off.
P.S. I paid $1,200 Installed.
sidro 04-19-2006, 12:53 PM Love them steps check my garage for pics best mod I've done I had another truck but It did not have the steps and I hated jumping In cause I did not have a step cause I dont like no other step but the Amp Research cause they tuck away like there not even there love them you should get them thats the best thing you will buy for your truck and I paid $1,200.00 Installed
Mavrick 04-19-2006, 04:59 PM The AMP steps have been the only "authorized" changes made to my Dmax. The wife and kids love them. They do okay in the mud and snow, I have had the truck burried to the rails in mud and the steps still functioned well. Would recommend some sort of mud flaps front and rear.
Big Jack 04-19-2006, 09:36 PM First thing I did to my truck. My wife is 5' and I had to do something and didn't want nerf bars. Glad I did it, love them. Easy to get in and out and the truck looks clean:ro) . Have not seen one bad word spoke about them. JMO
compression67 04-19-2006, 10:34 PM Thanks,
Some cat on ebay regularily sales them for 899 but a buttload for shipping so it works out to the 1100 dollar range. That's where I got the 900 from. Anyway thanks! I believe I'm sold!!
Hey 'Lost', I keep thinkin about that tight skirt! sry just human nature I guess.:help2:
socal87 04-22-2006, 09:05 PM I actually bought them from the same guy that you are talking about on Ebay. He is a great guy and very easy to deal with. I bought them for 1000 dollars exactly. I live 30 minutes away from him so he waived the shipping costs and just let me pick them up. Anyway good luck they are a really good step and can sustain a lot of weight.
The guy that I bought them from name on Ebay was DACOTRUCK . If that is the same person.
Here is one that he recently sold for 919.

bstetler 04-23-2006, 12:39 AM great steps. I had the Kodiak steps before and they are total junk!! Don't waste your mony on those. I back the Amp steps up 100% never a problem and they never come down when your driving around. Just one thing .. I too have never seen these for $900. If you can find them at that price BUY THEM. Thats a great deal.
Hoser805 04-23-2006, 01:28 AM You won't regret it! :ro)
VFRRider 04-23-2006, 12:06 PM How will the black powdercoat hold up? My OEM black powdercoat bars rusted through in 3 winters, they are off the truck, total junk now. Has anyone used them up north for multiple winters?
compression67 04-27-2006, 11:08 PM Welp,
I just got the box open! I bought them straight from Amp Research's web site, 1029.00 to my front door. They have some sales discount thingy going.
I'm not looking forward to pulling the door panels on the install, never fails -- I always break something when pulling a door panel:eek:.
Also got the PPE Hot+2 ET Eliminator and a nice set of Guages to boot. Its gonna be a busy/fun weekend!):h
aziator 04-28-2006, 07:36 AM Installed mine last week, greatest mod yet
Denali02 04-28-2006, 11:19 PM coolest mod i've done. reat quality, functional, and looks great. bars are old news - imo ;)
SteelMastiff 05-04-2006, 02:27 AM For those of you that own these steps how do they mount? Do they mount to the frame rails? or do they mount to the rocker panels? or a combo of both? Is there a lot of drilling required? Thanks!!!

compression67 05-06-2006, 10:51 AM Okay, you need to drill 4 holes per support so 16 total. The support at first looks pretty weak cause it just goes to sheet metal but its pretty darn strong. Must be something about splittin the load/force...
Anyway the bottom of the Support mounts right up to the bottom of the Rocker and then on the top side of the Support you kick a 'L-Bracket' off to the top of the Rocker, they give you these little wedge/triangle plates to accomplish it.
Here's a couple pics I didnt use a flash on the last one so had to brighten up to show the parts.

Hope this helps! It took me about a 12 pack to mount'em - a night of sleep to recover and wired them up the next day, wire job is pretty slick/easy.
SteelMastiff 05-06-2006, 03:14 PM compression67, thanks for the great write up!!!!:thankyou2 :beerchug:
aziator 05-06-2006, 03:48 PM Has anyone that has installed them had a problem with the step hitting the rocker panel? I have seen 2 different trucks now that both hit on the very front of the drivers side, just the edge of the step. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this, mine are spaced perfectly on the passenger side and good at the rear portion of the drivers side.
SteelMastiff 05-06-2006, 09:20 PM Do any of you power step owners have any close up pics with the steps retracted? I am curious as to how much of the step tucks under the rocker!!! Or do they just angle from the frame to the rocker?
SteelMastiff 05-06-2006, 09:47 PM Never mind, I found what I was looking for in a few garages!!!:cool2:

Hi, is there a way to bypass the opening of the step?
I am thinking in the event that I am sitting in an awkward position on rocks that are close to the bottom of the door. If I need to get out of the truck to take a look can I stop the deployment of the step to prevent it hitting the rocks?
SteelMastiff 05-07-2006, 11:38 AM That is a great question indeed!!!
nelsduramax 05-07-2006, 12:47 PM Another by-pass would be if you were washing the truck and need to use the step to reach the roof. Could a switch be added to trigger the steps without opening the doors?
compression67 05-07-2006, 08:19 PM Hi, is there a way to bypass the opening of the step?
You could bring the ground wire back into the dash to a toggle pretty darn easily - which would disable them - neat thing is, you could disable them in the up position for Rocky Grades and disable them in the down position for the Car Wash.
I believe I may do this tomorrow(this is good idea). The darn treads on the step hold dirt pretty good while in the up position, this will make car wash alot nicer.
SteelMastiff 05-07-2006, 08:34 PM Let us know if it works out for you!! This is one of the first mods I am planning when my new baby arrives in a couple of weeks!!!
2500HD Toy Hauler 05-08-2006, 12:06 AM I put them on myself just before doing the lift. The quality of workmanship of the alluminum parts is beautiful and the install was a breaze. The unit was really thought out down to the wiring harness fitting just right. I get people stopping me all the time to ask who makes them. I agree that is one of the best mods out there and even at the steep price they are worth it. You would not be disapointed.
compression67 05-10-2006, 11:40 PM I forgot,.. you dont need a switch to disable these things - they're pressure sensitive. Any light pressure on the bottom side while coming down and they stop dead in their tracks. Likewise in the other direction, if you want'em down for the car wash just rest your foot on them as you shut the door and they stay down.
Slick little boogers they are.):h
ickman99 05-20-2006, 11:11 AM I use mine every time I wash my truck , I just open the door then put my foot on it and close the door the step stays out so I can stand on it to wash it.
aziator 05-20-2006, 02:13 PM My buddy was going to run the power wire into the cab onto a switch...
Has anyone had the steps line-Xed? Mine have a few rock chips/marks on the bottom and side so when I take my truck next week to get the line-X done I am going to do the steps too. I just don't know if I should do them all black or color match the underside so it matches the rockers (haveing them lineXed color match also). Tops will definitely still be black.
UncleFester 05-20-2006, 05:21 PM Aziator:
Let me know how the linex works out on your step. That will add a few pounds to each of them - i wonder if it will trigger the mechanism that keeps them from coming up... I have my bed and my Ranchhand front bumper Line-X'd...
The AMP power steps (bought from Beststep) are the bomb - i absolutely love them.
aziator 05-20-2006, 11:59 PM I spoke to one of the engineers at AMP Research and he said that Line-Xing the steps wont affect them nor void the warranty in any way. I will post pics as soon as I get it done.
UncleFester 05-21-2006, 12:19 AM that could be SHWEEEET!!
I'm a Line-X freak... did an Entire 16 foot trailer i use for my ATV's... got tired of it looking rusted...
