: Suburban Diesel
hklvette 04-16-2006, 04:55 PM Hey guys and gals,
What was the last year that the D-max was offered in a Suburban? Does anyone know if GM will be putting LBZs into the GMT-900 Suburban?
Thanks,
hklvette
SmoknDmax 04-16-2006, 05:12 PM You could never get the D-Max in a Suburban directly from GM. There are many people who have said they would buy one if GM did it, but so far it is just a dream.
If you have deep pockets, you can try this place. http://www.duramaxsuburban.com/
DURYMCGEE 04-16-2006, 05:44 PM dmax was never in a sub. last diesel that was in a sub was the 6.5 in 99
hklvette 04-16-2006, 05:52 PM ohhh...thanks! what distinguishes a D-max from the 6.2/ 6.5?
DURYMCGEE 04-16-2006, 07:46 PM Dmax is 6.6, it is much more powerful than the 6.2 and 6.5...
tbusciglio 04-16-2006, 08:06 PM This is all stuff that I have heard and nothing confirmed.
I have heard that on the HD the so called 2" body lift "option" which is I guess the thicker frame. It also accommodates additional clearances for the Dmax and the body. I would suspect that there are issues with the suburban body and the thicker frame.
marcdeluca 04-24-2006, 06:19 PM I heard that the 'burb might get the detuned Dmax in '07. It would be like the Express van in '06, with 250 hp and the 4L80 tranny.

Who the hell wants a detuned Duramax?
Havalilsi 04-24-2006, 07:54 PM How come Ford was able to fit a big wagon and call it a Excursion. Couldn't Chevy do the same? Then again I guess the cost of what it would sell for would probabely scare people away.

Nothing a little EFI live cannot fix, as for a 4l80E-:t

Because Ford used the Super Duty frame under the Excursion. If GM used the HD frame under the 2500 Suburban/Yukon XL instead of the 1500HD/2500 or whatever they call it this year frame the DMAX/Alli combo would drop right in.
My understanding was that the engine fits but not the Allison. Even a detuned Duramax would be better than a 6.0L gasser in that application.

The Excursion wasn't exactly profitable for Ford. They have stopped producing them because they didn't sell well enough.

I heard it was something like 85% of the ones that did sell were diesels.
You cannot tell me that 5.4 would move that thing anywhere in a hurry.
marcdeluca 04-29-2006, 10:13 PM I thought the V10 was standard in the Excursion?

If I remember correctly you could order it with the 5.4L V8, 6.8L V10, or the diesel.
By the way, if you want a Diesel Suburban make sure you send an e-mail to GM and tell them so. The more people that say something the better chance we have of getting one.
Diesels_n_Poker 04-29-2006, 11:18 PM I thought Ford listened to the tree-huggers and stopped making them because the greenies hated the concept of 10 people moving around in one personal vehicle... They wanted 5 hybrids to move those same people...
The Powerstroke Excursion was the katz-azz. Too bad GM hasn't done it yet...
bcarricarte 04-30-2006, 12:41 AM Think about it in all reality with gas prices the way the are many people are frowning away from the giant suvs. The 5.4 isnt that great of an engine, the v10 isnt impressive at all and the diesel was great but at a larger cost. The amazing thing is with the 7.3 I get around 17 mpg around town, but with the same driving in my dmax I get like 14. The 7.3 is sluggish, but its bulletproof and efficient. Mainly what I'm getting at is that not many people are wanting a vehicle that gets 8 mpg in gas or the have to pay an extra 5 grand to get decent mileage. That in my opinion is what hurt the excursion.
95suburban 04-30-2006, 01:12 AM That's why I love my 6.5L Suburban. 22mpg highway and it wasn't that expensive (I paid less than the MSRP on the new Tahoe).
However, there are still plenty of people out there who still need a family hauler that can tow a good sized trailor and still get pretty good mileage. (I know of six people personally that would love to have a diesel Suburban and would go out and buy one if it was offered, but wouldn't buy the Excursion because it was too big.) There is really nothing out there like that right now (other than the diesel vans, but most don't want a full size van as their everyday driver) Large SUVs like the Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, ect should come with a diesel, atleast as an option, for those who still need a real SUV. A gasser just doesn't do it, especially when it comes to towing, which kills mileage in a gas engine. Honestly, even if they put in a detuned diesel that only makes 250hp/450lb-ft tq I would still be happy, plus it would probably be cheaper and get even better mileage. Look at Mercedes, their diesel E320 has 50 less HP than their gas version, but 100lb-ft more torque, gets better mileage, and only costs $500 more.......and they can't keep them in stock, in fact they had to up production, and that is a $50,000+ car. Why can't GM and Ford offer that in their SUVs, where it would make the most sense? :(
mille-ryan 05-15-2006, 11:36 PM They stopped making the Excursion a few years ago because of poor sales and the last year I dont think u could even get the diesel.Ford does make the excursion with the smaller 6.0 now, and I am considering in the future.I am however very interested in the Burb with D-max/Alli combo that the guy in Parker is putting out, but price will be a huge factor.
ColoGator 05-21-2006, 07:23 PM Yeah, I believe the last year for the Excursion was 2005 and you could get it with the 6.0 Powerstroke. -:t Your best bet would be an early 2003 when they were still putting in the 7.3. The 2003s also got several updates including revised front suspension; I forget the details but they were supposed to ride better.
Agreed on a Dmax 'burban; I probably would've gone that route if one was offered. With the Excursion gone, I bet Chevy would sell enough of them to be profitable.
hdmax 05-21-2006, 08:37 PM ohhh...thanks! what distinguishes a D-max from the 6.2/ 6.5?
In 06 only about 250 ft lb tq, and maybe 150 hp;)
TheBac 05-27-2006, 11:16 AM If and when 2003-2004 Suburbans come down in price to around $10-12K, I think I'm going to attempt this swap. If you start with a 3/4 ton Sub, the swap actually looks very easy.
Yes, I've done all the research on this already.
yosemitesamiam 05-29-2006, 10:51 AM Hey all...new here...figured it was a great place to start talking about engines, etc. Diesel to me makes the most sense...I became a believe as an owner of a 2001 VW Golf TDI. Can't beat that kinda mileage with a stick! Anyhow...thinking of picking up a Land Cruiser and possibly doing a diesel convert. Most of the Cruiser heads are getting 1/2 cut trucks with diesel's from Japan, but I think I'd rather swap in a 12V CTD, or other American made diesel.
Last I read on a new Diesel Sub, they were talking about a V6 'max....dunno though.
