: Slip Yoke Replacement
fastattack309 04-13-2006, 09:46 PM Was not shure if this post went here or under the drivetrain but this is my first Duramax with a Alli transmission but i have a question. I took my 2004.5 2500HD to the stealer today to have it looked at. I am having the same problem that many others are having the bump when you start and stop. From the many posts here i have concluded that i needed to grease the splines. Well my truck is still under warranty so i took it in and told the service manager what it was doing and told him that i thought that it was a slip yoke problem and asked him about the TSB for the nickle plated yoke replacement. He told me that this Nickel plated slip yoke was not for my transmission and they could not replace it. This did not sound right to me but i wanted to make shure i was right before i told him that he did not know what he was talking about. Everything on my truck is OEM. I have a automatic Alli trans. I do have the split drive shaft. He did say that they could grease the splines. I thought you removed the Yoke to get to it to grease it. Any input would be appreciated thanks.
duramax/a 04-13-2006, 09:53 PM Mine is the 03 with 21k miles and I have the new nickel plated slip yoke. Dealer cost on that part if I remember right is $275.00. Thanks again to the General.

bigjohnson450 04-13-2006, 10:06 PM i am having the same problem and i did remove mine and greased the crap out of it and it was better for a day or two and now its back to doing the samething so i dont know if i want to spend the money on a new yolk and have it still do it. so if you find a cure i would really be interested on what it is.

Is there any reason why my vehicle would not be covered under this TSB Number: 01-04-17-004A. It references four wheel dive and all wheel drive. Is that a generic statement they use or is two wheel drive vehicles covered too?
SmokinCigars 04-14-2006, 12:08 PM From the information I have been given, the nickel plated slip yolk is not for Crew cabs.
I found the Amsoil red spray grease worked quite well. (I don't have the can infront of me).
Diesel_Dog 04-14-2006, 12:51 PM What is the 'bump' like? I had a shudder at slow speeds (~3-MPH) accelerating and decelerating. Problem didn't happen at higher speeds. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the u-joint between the tranny and the driveshaft.
fastattack309 04-14-2006, 01:46 PM It bumps when you are comming to a complete stop. It is almost like someone has tapped you from behind. Then when you take off it will bump again. I thought it was the slip yoke. But the dealer told me i did not have a slip yoke. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me.

Sounds almost like the problem that I was having. I wouldn't say mine was like a bump from behind, but a shimmy that shook the whole truck. The guy at the dealer and I climbed in and took it around the parking lot(problem was really noticeable at slow parking lot speeds). He said that he had never felt anything like it before. The mechanics took a look and had to cut my u-joint right off....Now she runs smooth again. It was replaced under warranty (Truck had ~32000 miles).
rushingbc 04-16-2006, 10:55 AM I had the same problem, almost exactly. I pulled the driveshaft and regreased it, trust me, it reall needed it. Mine was almost bone dry. It completely made that clunk/bump/running over honda shimmy go away. Two days later u-joint started making noise so I had to replace it though. Who knows, it could be a little of both.
If you are going to do it yourself, I would grease the driveshaft first. It takes 15 minutes, one 11mm wrench, good grease, and some thing to mark the position of the driveshaft so you put it back in right. Keeps you from having to wait on the stealer too. Just my .02
fastattack309 04-16-2006, 05:30 PM RushingBc Do you have a one piece or two piece driveshaft. I have a two piece and i am not shure how to remove it.
rushingbc 04-19-2006, 11:26 AM fastattack, I do have the two piece driveshaft. All you need to do is take off the 11mm bolts on the u-joint retainers on the rear end. Make sure you mark the slip yoke at the carrier bearing with a grease pencil or something so you can line it up on the right spline, but once you take off those four bolts the drive shaft will slide right out of the slip yoke. Get a can of good synthetic grease and lube 'er up. It's pretty easy, but I'm not so good at explaining stuff.
fastattack309 04-19-2006, 02:12 PM Thanks i got my dealer to do it under warranty. I will know how to do it now when warranty goes out
rushingbc 04-19-2006, 02:44 PM It's always good to have someone else get dirty, and then someone else to pay for it too! Glad that I could help.
bigjohnson450 04-19-2006, 10:48 PM fastattack, did the yolk replace solve the problem?
fastattack309 04-19-2006, 11:41 PM All they did was grease the splines. It is 100% better. I guess time will tell

Do you have a 2wd or 4wd? I don't think you have a "slip yoke" either. I have always heard it referred to as a primary driveshaft yoke.
I didn't know that the HDs had the issue. I have an 05 gasser that I had to have it replaced on, but not my max, yet. The gasser had 15,000 miles on it the first time they fixed it.(greased it) and then I took it in with 39,000 and all the sudden the fix was to replace it and not grease it again. Funny when your paying for it, what happens. Anyway it doesn't do it anymore.
If your truck is still under warranty, then they should fix it. Tell them that it clunks when you take off and stop, like the Ubolts on the rear end are loose and the axle is shifting up and down. That is what I thought it was at first.
fastattack309 04-20-2006, 06:45 PM It is a 2wd. I did tell the dealer what it was doing and he said that the tsb for the slip yoke did not include the Allison transmission. so he greased something and it is not doing it anymore for now. But i am sure it will return when the warranty is out and it is on my dime.
