I just purchased my first duramax. 2002 Chevy 2500HD w/ Alli 48K miles. I've read about the injector failures being a potential problem. It is all Duramax's or just particular years? What are the symptons? I've read they become noisey, but what about engine performance? Can you discribe exactly what a failing injector sounds like? Is there any additive I can use that will help pro-long injector life?

http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifI know that is alot of questions. But I'm sure others on this forum and benefit as well.

i bought my baby this past february...it had 38+k miles on it...at 41k 2 injectors went...the shop foreman where i had it serviced ran a warranty history on it...it ran SIX pages!...it had previously had 2 injectors replaced...gm now replaces ALL injectors when ANY fail...

the symptoms i had felt like the engine "paused"...it then wudn't accelerate...VERY scary on the interstate!...fortunately, i wasn't very far from the shop when it happened...injectors were replaced, and with everything else that's been done, i essentially have a new truck

i KNOW that the dmaxes injectors are BIG issue with this forum, but i think the problem is a small percentage, considering how many dmaxes are out there...just my opinion...

i LOVE my truck, and am VERY glad that i bought it, and not a ford or dodge...

i use howes additive in my truck, but i think stanadyne or primrose wud be better for you...according to what my shop told me...u'll see LOTS of opinions about additives here...

good luck...just drive and enjoy your truck

My Dmax is also an '02 built 12 '01 so I have the injectors before any mods were done. Have had no problems at all, I agree with Pony driver with all the Dmaxs on the road only a few are having problems. I use an additive (Stanadyne Performance) and have installed a Cat pre OEM Fuel filter, At least if my injectors fail it won't be a poor fuel problem. As far as the engine performance, love it, tons of power and all stock, and 25% better fuel economy than my 95 Yukon. Plus in this part of the country diesel is a lot cheaper than gas.

our '02 is also one that was built prior to GM changing the injectors ... 59,000+ miles to date with no engine/transmission issues ... ran Howe's every tank for first 40,000 then switched to Total Power when I had a Mega filter added post OEM ... have an 8,000+ mile tow lined up for this summer, can only hope she keeps on trucking

I had 3 cup seals leak and then 10k later 2 injectors replaced. I think the two were related. I think there is an issue, but it's not a large issue. Probably 90% of the folks will never see a problem or the issue will be due to bad fuel and a poor OEM filter system. Just my .02.

I lost the injectors right at 60,000 miles....

Just drivin' along enjoying the weekend then ..... wham SES and loss of power, truck decelerates off the freeway, dead pedal .... I mean right out if the blue..... didn't even see it coming.

The SES went away and it drove normal after I changed the fuel filter (I still don't know why). Then did it again 2 days later...

Dealer said it set a P03099? Massive fuel leak. They change all 8, no questions asked....

I will say, looking back now, that the engine pulsed at idle for about a week before, but who knows if that means anything?

Anyway, the truck drives like new again, dealer did a great job.

Keep on truckin'.

Blinky, I was wondering how you made out. Glad it's OK. I still don't understand what changing the filter did for it the first time either.

My plan is to just run an additive that is mostly a lubricant, add a premary filter, and never worry about it again. I might have injector problems down the road, but I have done the best I can.

Is the Cat pre OEM Fuel Filter a second filter that was added. If so where can one be purchased? This sounds like a good idea. I love my D-Max and want to make it last.

Do a search for secondary filtration. Tons of reading in this forum. You can opt for a Nicktane(Cat) from www.nicktane.com/ (http://www.nicktane.com/) , Mega from www.kennedydiesel.com (http://www.kennedydiesel.com) , or a racor setup from www.Lubespecialist.com (http://www.Lubespecialist.com) . Those are just three vendors on this site that offer secondary filtration kits. Some people have built their own kits. Read up on them and make your own decision what you want.

Yes it is a second filter. I used the Nictane kit, worked well for me. I was concerned about restricting the fuel flow with an additional filter and in MHO the Cat offers the least resistance to fuel flow. The only draw back is the lack of a heater in the filter like the Racor has, but in my area it doesn't get cold enough to matter.

YZ,

I dunno.... To be honest i don't think it made any difference.

Both times the SES set and then 3 to 4 starts later disappeared and the truck drove normal......

Very strange.

I too am very pleased that everything worked out as well as it didhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

I just recently bought an 01 GMC and had 4 injectors go bad in two seperate incidents during the first two weeks of ownership. Thank God for warranties. FYI this truck has 100k on the odo so it was out of factory warranty. Anyway, all eight have been replaced under dealer warranty so all is good. The events that preceded both failures were identical. When I first took delivery of the truck there was a slight surge in the idle that the dealer agreed to take care of. Almost immediately after picking the truck up it left a nice big puddle of fuel in the driveway. Whent back and had 4 injectors on one side replaced. Two days after picking it up the same thing happened all over again. Other 4 injectors replaced. Now in my case the truck ran fine with the exception of a lumpy idle after the fuel puddle appeared. Both times the injectors had stuck open causing an over fueling condition that dumped diesel into the crank case and out an overflow line. Next up is a secondary fuel filtration set up like some of the other guys have mentioned. It's cheap insurance against a hefty repair bill. Edited by: Dutch110
