: Dont buy a "cold heat" soldering iron.
DURAtotheMAX 04-11-2006, 10:14 PM quite frankly, they suck!! Thing doesnt work for beans. It heats up the wire, but it doesnt heat it up fast enough. The wire insulation melts before the wire gets hot enough to melt the solder in, ill be taking it back tomorrow and exchanging it for one of the butane soldering irons. I used to have one but lost it...
oh well... off.

Clark20ry 04-11-2006, 10:20 PM I agree my $8 plug in soldering iron works like a champ. I struggle and fight with that POS and it ain't worth the $20 I paid for it...
geabis 04-11-2006, 10:31 PM mine didn't shut off and something inside fried caused the whole thing to melt.
they suck big time!
the only thing it soldered was it self
dozerboy 04-11-2006, 10:34 PM Ben you need to change you avatar.
I got a Weller Portasol PSI 100K its butane and the best solder iron I have used.
DURAtotheMAX 04-11-2006, 10:38 PM im already looking for one so chill
moss022 04-11-2006, 10:43 PM i have one and thought i was dumb cause i couldnt get it to work. maybe a pic for me to see what you guys are talking about, the one that works?
RickDLance 04-11-2006, 10:47 PM Moving to the proper forum!):h
DURAtotheMAX 04-11-2006, 10:49 PM doh!!
there everyone. new avatar. coolest freakin tractor in the world. simplicity legacy 4x4 27hp, 3ph, 60" plow, and ROPS cause I like to roll tractors. Its not the diesel model tho :(
Diesel_Dog 04-11-2006, 11:00 PM I agree, that cold heat is a scam! I couldn't get it to even melt pure solder!?! Thought it would be a good tool to have around in the truck toolbox (roadside headlight mod maybe?). Took it right back to the store for a refund. Too bad somebody didn't post about this sooner.
RickDLance 04-11-2006, 11:25 PM Sorry Ben, The devil made me do it!:):):)
Rttoys 04-11-2006, 11:34 PM Mini torch is the way to go.
DURAtotheMAX 04-11-2006, 11:35 PM

Yup...I have one and I hate it. You have to get *both* electrodes on the solder at the same time and be able to hold it there...yeah right. In an absolute emergency I would be able to get it to work I suppose, as long as I had good lighting, a solid bench with a sturd vise...and there was ABSOLUTELY no wind blowing, but that's not exactly emergency conditions now is it?
SleeperTRK 04-12-2006, 12:15 AM Got one for christmas and i did the same thing with it as my edge w/ attitude. Threw it in the trash! They are crap.
Todd
COLD HEAT.. SNAKE OIL!
Best portable one I had was a old gray Sears rechargeable one (Ni-Cad).. battery and charger are still good but I broke the tip a few weeks back. I couldn't find one so I bought a new red butane type at the Sears tool store, it's OK but I wish I had a new tip for the old one!
RickDLance 04-12-2006, 01:19 AM If only Dewalt made an 18volt one!:)

I had a butane fired one a few years ago that worked fairly well. Lost it in a move some time back though.
Yibbutkeen 04-12-2006, 03:56 AM Interesting. I read a writeup in a professional magazine (one of the radio engineering ones I think) and they liked it. Said it wasn't something you'd really use in a professional environment (too slow for constant bench use), but was perfectly adequate as a home tool.
I guess we don't all keep $500 weller soldering stations at hand

If you threw a J/A in the trash, I'll have to kick your a$$!!!
SleeperTRK 04-12-2006, 11:24 AM Start kickin
DURAtotheMAX 04-12-2006, 12:05 PM you literally threw it in the trash???
or sold it?
cdhd2001 04-12-2006, 12:32 PM you literally threw it in the trash???

If he threw it in the trash then I nominate him for the Darwin Award.:ro)
But first we need to have a butt kicking contest!:ro)
OCDUNE 04-12-2006, 01:02 PM I got one as a cheap gift, it works ok if you use it on a small gauge wire. The trick to making it work is good contact. You are just basically arcing between the notches on the tip, only works if you have good pressurs on something conductive.
SleeperTRK 04-12-2006, 07:26 PM I seriously threw it away, and here is why.
1st: I spent $1200 on the edge system with attitude.
2nd: I was in vegas, passing throgh and the truck shut off, dead, no go, wouldnt go! In a pissed off rage I yanked edge out and the truck ran fine.
I called edge and they sent out a replacement for free cause of heat issues.
3rd: I go out to start my truck the monitor is blank and the truck wont start, wont even try!
Again in a very pissed of fasion I jerked the system out and shipped her back in.
Edge was great they sent out a new one over night.
4th and final time. I was pulling a goose neck loaded with 3 tons of hay up an 8% grade, the engine was getting a little hot. Not hot enough for me to worry but my edge setting caught it and shut me down. Not like took power away shut down it killed the engine! Now shutting of a hot engine is about the worst you can do, it boiled every ounce of fluid out of my radiator. Luck i had a case of arrowhead water in the truck to fill it with.
And as you can probably imagine i yanked edge out again, but this time i threw it into the trees. My buddy with me went and picked it up to see the damage. So when I got home it went into the trash can.
Still wanna kick some a$$ now?
Todd
Rttoys 04-12-2006, 10:32 PM I don't blame you. If that would have happened to me it would of had a serious case of lead poisening.
SleeperTRK 04-13-2006, 01:14 AM I must add tho, even with all that crap, edge products was great with customer service. I dont have a single complain from that aspect. Good guys up there in UT. Keep it up
Todd
RichLockyer 04-13-2006, 02:24 AM Here's mine. (http://www.masterappliance.com/selfign.html)
It's a beast.... equivalent of a 80 watt electric pencil.
I used to use the Weller Portasol... awesome little unit, but it was like a 25 watt pencil... I couldn't use it with a slight breeze, and even in dead calm, it was iffy soldering a junction of 5 pieces of #16 stranded.
The Ultratorch 100 will make a solder bowling ball :)
Ya... it's about $120 with a steel hinged case.
Unit453 04-13-2006, 02:38 AM I dont blame you a bit. Apparently my truck wasnt too keep on them either. First box came the 8 marbles in the coffee can during warm up. Then a constant CEL. Then pilot enjection issues. Next box came more pilot enjection issues and white smoke at idle with yet more CEL's. 3rd box, truck wouldnt even start. Unplugged, and guess what? Yup another CEL and you guessed it, another pilot injection problem and some shift solenoid as well as loss of communication between the PCM and the tranny....4th box came and I sold it immidiately to a guy on here brand new in the box. I wanted nothing to do with it. I can say that their customer service was excellent and Aaron, the one I was always speaking with, is the one who sent me a link to this site.
40,000 miles later with Hypertech and no complaints here.

nwpadmax 04-25-2006, 01:32 PM The cold heat gun works as a direct resistance heater between its two graphite electrodes....I had to dig through their patent info to find that out. That's why it's "cold," because the only heat generated is in the part itself.
If you can't pass a current through the parts being soldered, then it's of no use.
silverado04 05-17-2006, 07:21 PM Butane ... SNAP ON Blue Point!! none better!
Fact got a new in the box extra one. They run about $120. but they are good!
but then for in the shop or house I like my weller.. its hard to beat.
