: What would you pay/offer for it...
Polarbear 04-11-2004, 10:37 AM Hey guys, some of you may know ive been poking around this site trying to get some info, and find me a diesel. Granted ive only been looking for about a month, and really dont want to buy til june/july, its been lookin bleak. At least if i want a duramax. Resale on these trucks is incredible, or at least in my area they are. Unless theres like 100k on them, they are up in the 26,27K and up....
anyways, back just before i joined here i drove a 03 2500 LS extcab short box, 4x4 d-max. What a truck, it was a great drive. Wish id drove it more than 7 miles. The truck has 30k (+,- a few) and from what i can tell theres not a mark on the thing. I asked what they were lookin to get for it, and he said around 30ghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. Damn lots of dough for me. Seems high to me, but i dont know a whole heck of alot bout them. But the more i thought about it, if i buy it now, i could drive it for at least 6-7 yrs at least, and in the end more than justify the cost of of it. My only problems, are at 19, i dont know if i deserve a truck this nice. But then i think i can drive for a long time, and justify it
The owners of the dealer its at, our families are long time friends. Thier kids work and help out on our farm. So im hoping that might help me at least a bit in the price range. Im planning on going insome time this week to try and work on a price, and lookin for some insight. Are they inline, high, low,,??? Sorry for rambling on, id apprciate any info youd guys be willing to share....Heres a photo...

rickles04 04-11-2004, 10:40 AM thats a damn good looking truck
dmaxalliTech 04-11-2004, 10:55 AM That price is inline for what they are getting out here
2MuchFun 04-11-2004, 11:07 AM Ok, I gotta ask:
WHAT does a 19 year old need with a truck like that?
If you're even a tiny bit like I was at 19 your taste will change 100 times in the next 5 years. Dont go committing yourself to anything more than a couple years! What about college? Are you already set there? If not, buying a expensive truck is the last thing you need to do.
Now if you can make the truck work for you earning money, sure, but I really doubt you'll get any type of commercial gig.
Sorry man, but Im trying to get you to really think about this.
You can get a NICE 1500 with a big gasser and be a very happy man for alot less!
John R 04-11-2004, 11:38 AM The above post makes a lot of sense but, You only go around once and if you want this truck and can afford it, go for it. The things in life that you enjoy, are what it's all about.
If you truly want this truck, buy it or you will regret it later on.
chevmeister 04-11-2004, 12:11 PM if you work hard enough to afford it you deserve it. im only 23.

2MuchFun 04-11-2004, 12:50 PM if you work hard enough to afford it you deserve it. im only 23.
And think back to how different you were at 19. Hell, Im only 32 and 19, 23 or 26 seem like a different life ago! ~ Ahhh the good ol days!! This guy should be enjoying life without responsibilities like this!
I agree, if he's in the right position, go for it! But he already said it would be a bit of a strain and justified it with the idea of keeping it longer...
I mean no ill will, I just dont want to see a (what seems to be) nice responsible young guy get buried in debt on one of the worst investments there are; vehicles. <even though he does have great taste http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif>
GMC2500HD 04-11-2004, 01:27 PM Hey when I was 16 I had a brand spakin new Z-71. Found it in the driveway that morning. I think every kid should have a new truck or whatever they want.
2K2AD 04-11-2004, 01:31 PM if you work hard enough to afford it you deserve it. im only 23.

I hear ya. When you were his age would you have listned to the same advice? I know I sure would not have!
It seems like a good value for the truck, buy it if you want. There is plenty of time to regret the decision later. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
The older I get, the more I understand that youth is wasted on the young...

Unitsup 04-11-2004, 02:01 PM Seems high to me. Have you looked at buying new? With better interest rates on a new truck and rebates you might be able to buy new for close to the same payment.
You can go to edmunds.com and load this used truck in to find the value.
SpoolinTurbo 04-11-2004, 03:04 PM I'm 24. I had been looking at everything I got in my truck for about 2 years... and in all honesty I had been looking since I bought my standard cab dakota. That was one of my big "youth" mistakes.
Buy a beater s10 or something. SOmething that only takes you 2 paychecks in full to pay for. If this time next year you're still dreaming and oohing and aahing about something, then by all means buy it.
On the other end of the stick... I have my dream truck, even if it's currently sitting at the dealer waiting for a motor.
StraitDiesel 04-11-2004, 03:36 PM I'm 21 and just bought an 04' D/A last month... I had a 90' Z71 in high school and just traded in my 96' chevy 2500... I wanted the D/A and couldn't really justify getting it, but I got it anyway, because it's what I wanted... and vehicles are very important to me and it was eating me up not having what I wanted so I got what I wanted... and I haven't regretted it one bit, just do what makes you happy, because that's what really is important... just make sure you can pay the bills, because it's a lot!!

Polarbear 04-11-2004, 03:51 PM Wow guys, i never expected this amt of responses... I really apprecaite all the different views. I have no problem w/ guys telling me how it might be the right thing for me, i can deal w/it, its only words. Ill try and answer the ?'s some of you post.
2muchfun: Im set for college. Took a one yr setup of ag classes. Trust me if i was still there, this truck would be such a non-issue. Almost everyone else on our farm has got diesels, and its so much more verstatile.Ive wanted a diesel since i was like 10, i just love them, everything about them. Itd be worth then id be able to tow our combine heads, or haul seed, fertilzer whatever where was as w/my wimpy 94 4.0 2x4 ranger, that shouldnt go off the asphalt, or else itll get stuck.Id like to not have to count on everyone else to tow stuff for me, or whatever else. When i said it would be strain on funds, its a strain cause i like to buy everything w/cash. I can get the moeny, from our farm, and pay that back, alot faster and easier then taken it from the bank and payin intresethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif to boot....Granted id prolly keep it 6-7 yrs to boot even if i did have the dough, just figure in this situation itd help my cause...
GMC2500HD- I can only wish i had that kinda luck. i dont mind paying for more toys, i believe it helps me respect them more. Dont take it the wrong way, as i know people that got exactly like you said, and babied just as much as mine, but i know others that massacre the living piss out of stuff in that situation...
SpoolinTurbo-Ive already been down that rd. My first pickup was a 200k ranger, that had no accesories except for a radio. It was good, cause id just started driving, had next to no respect for. My current pickup is really nice, i just need more for work. Ive been talking and oooin for bout 10 months and figure its time to put up.
I hope it doesnt seem like im trying to make excuses for my case or anything, or that im http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. Not my intentions by any means....
I will say however on a stupid move by me, i gave myself a litle screwjob this past winter. It startedsnowing in january, and things were slow on our farm and well the snow just kept coming, and i started riding more than i worked. Stupid kid decision right there, shoulda use my noggin, and worked, id be about 2-3gs further ahead, wont be a problem next winter, as im lining up jobs right now w/sleds for that time..
In the end, its still nowheres near a set in stone plan. It may never get past this stage, just have to see how things play out...
Thanks again for the replies guys-Adam Edited by: Polarbear
White Duramax 04-11-2004, 06:07 PM I am only 19 and I have had my Duramax for a year next month. As long as you work hard enough to pay for it, I would definately go for it. I have have paid for everything and will continue to pay the bank! I am going to college right know and working to pay for my truck. I may not deserve it, but I am paying for it so. I would get what you want, and can afford.
tanner 04-11-2004, 06:27 PM Thats a nice looking truck, price sounds right.. I say if you know you can afford it .. get it!! Nineteen is young, but if your payig for it your gonna respect it, and I can tell by what you write you are a smart kid and have thought this through. I say go for it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif Edited by: tanner
2MuchFun 04-11-2004, 07:40 PM Well, after that last post, I say Go for it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
You can use it, its what you want and you seem to have your S$%^ together, Good on you!
Now I feel bad; it took me till 30 to buy my first dissl'!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Chevysrus 04-11-2004, 08:14 PM Some advice, CASH TALKS, offer them $25K and be prepared to walk away. Bet they chase you out the door. You may have to pay a little more than the $25K, but far less than the $30K they are asking.
Good Luck, you sound like you have a great head on your shoulders and you should go far in life as long as you don't forget what you already know. There's a lot to learn, but you already have a great base to build on.
Get back to us and let us know what you decided to do and how you made out.
All the best
AndrewFessler 04-11-2004, 10:36 PM I dont know that I would buy this truck you listed, but if you can afford it and can make some money with it, go for it. I bought my first GM Diesel when I was 23 and bought my Duramax last year at 26. I don't regret it for a second.
Age shouldn't be the factor here as much as being able to pay for what you want should be.
Just keep in mind that if it has injector problems out of warranty, you'll have to find some extra cash to get that fixed.
Good Luck
Polarbear 04-12-2004, 07:44 AM I was thinking the same thing chevysrus, cash does love to talk. I may try and negoaitate a bit first, just to see how flexible they are...we will see
Im going to try and pick up the vin # and see if i can get it run, and see whats up been going on w/it. Whats the standard warrantys on these trucks? 36k/3 yrs? or is it more? What are injectors, thousand bucks?Thanks-Adam Edited by: Polarbear
Way, way back when I was 19, I was able to purchase a 2 year old Corvette. I put another 150K miles on it, was fortunate to be able to sell it for what I paid, and came away with a lot of pleasant memories.
Go for it!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Polarbear 04-12-2004, 10:11 PM A vette at 19......now theres a fun time...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Appreciate all the info guys. you guys are great...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif-Adam
mannytranny 04-12-2004, 10:46 PM It is a good exercise in self control to not such out and buy what you want just because you want it. If you lived life that way, you will be in deep trouble later on.
Surely there has to be a cheaper way. An older truck?
I would at least make sure that you would have the ability to take a 5000 dollar hit if something on it were to take a dump. No need for a 25k truck to be sitting there and no $ to fix it...
I would look at older PSD's or Cumminses...Stick, of course...
Polarbear 04-14-2004, 08:44 PM Hey guys...Well ive been working on this truck most of the week, and i dont think ive made grreat progress... I fibbed on the miles. Its actually just under 24000K...i thought it was more. The dealer however is standing pretty firm on price, 29K OTD seems to be about there bottomline. I looked it up on edmunds and it says 31,150 dealer retail and kbb says 33,340.....So i guess there a bit below. I was still hoping to get them down at least 26/27. I know none of you are here, and right in my situation, but if i were to go in w/ say 25/26 check/cash do you think theyd bite? Like i said the dealer is standing pretty firm, but i wonder if i wave close to that in there face, it might work....decisions decisions....
Edit: forgot to mention, that theres also another person looking at the truck, so i thats prolly another reason why they are trying to stay high. Although said guy, is havin trouble getting financed....Edited by: Polarbear
tanner 04-14-2004, 08:50 PM Never hurts to try..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
White Duramax 04-14-2004, 09:56 PM I kinda doubt you are going to get it for any less than 27k
Mike L. 04-14-2004, 11:09 PM If you love this truck, do it. Damn good lookin Dmax.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Well barring an act of god, this deal wont be happening...Sure sucks when people #### ya over....
White Duramax 04-15-2004, 09:43 PM Hey man, there are plenty of others ones out there. Dont get worked up over one truck. I looked at quite a few before I got mine. Keep looking, you might find one you like better.
Polarbear 04-19-2004, 09:00 PM Well, i dont knwo what i did to get my act of god, but somehow it happened. Will be going to the dealer in the next few days to finalize it. I spent the last 4-5 days going back and forth on it,since theres nothing really wrong w/my current vechile, and could wait a bit longer and maybe have a few more bucks, but in the end decided that, i havent really got any commiments to hold me back, w/some discovery of a bit of inhertiance money(may she rip), all the warranties that come w/this, and buying from someone i know wouldnt be tryin to pull a fast on me, i decided to go ahead and take it, ya only live once right?. I think 29 is a bit high, but i feel good about dealing w/them since i know them. Will be going in, in the next few days to finalize it.....
Id really like thank everyones input on my topic as i considered everything you all said....
will be the first chevy truck as any of us have had in quite a few yrs..heres to hoping for a kick ass next 6-7 yrs.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Congrats!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Since I was 17(now 28) i've owned a total of 8 trucks, 6 new, and 2 used. I worked hard for every one of them. As long as you can make the payments, I say you made a great choice.
Boy, now that I think back, I feel sorry for the people that bought my few trucks that I leased.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I will say, when I was younger there was definitly a lack of respect, especially knowing it was leased. But on the upside, I sure had alot of fun offroadinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.
st_pinetree 04-20-2004, 10:53 AM Congrats! I'm still looking for that perfect used Dmax. Been looking hard for over a month and I'd say your deal is a little better than I would expect to pay in my area(Western Montana). My options are more limited now as we drove an LT the other day, now the wifey says we have to have one of those. Also need a long box, they are rare as hen's teeth around here. Hopefully, some one will buy my PSD and I can look on the private market more. Enjoy your new ride!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Polarbear 04-20-2004, 12:24 PM Hey pinetree, maybe you already have, but take a look over on ebay. There are quite a few duramaxs on there, and a few long beds....dont remember if they are lt or not. Even tho im in NY, ill keep an eye for anything around here..
MaxFarmer 04-22-2004, 10:44 PM Congrats on the truck! Coming from one young (24) farmer to another, you wont be dissappointed! Have you gotten her home yet? I went throught the same struggles you did a year ago....then come tax time and the depreciation I could allow on the truck saved me $10K in taxes! You cant go wrong there.
In my opinion, there isnt a better truck for a farm application!
Good luck and I hope you have many great years with your truck!
Jason
