: Stock airbox mod
bombatse 04-09-2006, 04:52 PM I heard that an aftermarket intake is pretty much a waste,so I did a home made, mod.I just bought a k&n filter and cut out the bottom of the airbox and removed the mounting plate below it to get fresh air from the underside. The hole goes directly out the bottom of the fenderwell and gets cooler air.I drove it and it definately seems to have a bit more pep to it and I can definately hear the turbo better.Just a simple little thing to kill some sunday time.

so is an aftermarket filter.
demp223 04-09-2006, 06:05 PM DOnt forget to sield the box from engine heat as best as possible. The TxC mod work quite well and for $45.
RickDLance 04-09-2006, 06:07 PM The TX box kit won't help since he cut the bottom out. What he did is what Vararam does with their box.

RickDLance 04-09-2006, 06:22 PM It is a neat little "shield" that works with a stock or a "purposely" modified box. It shrouds the air intake of the box to draw cool air only, and you can cut out a hole in the front of the box to add even more cool air. I think TX will be proud of my description.:)

demp223 04-09-2006, 08:16 PM The TX mod should still work fine being it shields hot engine compartment air from top and sides of box and funnels in cooler air from bottom and fender vents.Him not having lower box(Like Vararam) will only aid in airflow coming from bottom not running into underside of stock box and directly into filter IMHO.

I have his kit and I don't see how it can possibly shield hot air from the top??? It installs on the front and side only. If someone wants to use it I suggest they follow TX's recommendations, or contact TX directly for more info.:)

What does that mean? When I looked at pics on this site, he only cut out the side facing the front of the truck.

Did you just contradict what you said earlier?

Are you refering to the cover of the airbox?
Ok, Rick, please explain yourself in regards to the above posts. Thanks
RickDLance 04-10-2006, 02:47 PM Tx only cuts out the front. As a mater of fact I was the first to do it with his mod.
The referance that lost you was He, (The guy that STARTED THIS thread, not TX) has already cut the bottom out of his box. That makes the TX kit not nearly as effective.
And yes I talked to TX about it last night.
Does this make it clear?:)

I should have reread the posts before ranting, especially after reading.. I think my description will make Tx proud. So now this is clear as my filtered water! Thanks
sidro 04-10-2006, 03:27 PM What motor airbox are you guys talking about LLY or LBZ
RickDLance 04-10-2006, 03:50 PM 2nd gen LLY. Rumor has it that the LBZ air intake is so good it will take a magic trick to make an aftermarket system any better. Some of us even talked about using it on the older trucks and 1 or more guys actually did it. durabeast2, even with the quotes it gets confusing. Anything else I can help with?:):):)
DuraBeast2 04-10-2006, 06:23 PM Has anybody tried to add insulation to the outside of the oem airbox? I have used a sticky pipe wrap that comes in a 20' roll to wrap hot water pipes. I know it would stick, don't know how well it would stay stuck with underhood temps. Any thoughts?
demp223 04-10-2006, 09:48 PM It keeps the engine compartment heat from coming over top and around top and sides of airbox .It only allows air in from below and from frontal fender area.:)I have it as well.Pretty simple shroud design.

Maybe its just your wording that confuses me. but I still don't understand.:) I would be more then happy to talk via PM. Maybe one on one would help me understand how the top of the box is affected? If anybody else understands what I'm missing here post it please!:)

I think this would be a good idea if you could get it to stay. Where I see it working best is in stop and go situations. The heat under the hood saturates the box at these times more then at speed, although I think the benefits would be all around.:)
demp223 04-11-2006, 08:54 PM Ill word it this way.The Tx mod by itself does nothing for top of box.Using the tx mod in conjuction with factory lid seals it so air flow is primarily drawn in from bottom(not from above=top=my description) of vehicle as opposed to factory box without mod pulls in air from all around itself:) WE definitely know how it works but trying to describe it in writing clearly is sometimes harder.:)
RickDLance 04-11-2006, 09:57 PM I definately agree!:):):) I think!):h
demp223 04-12-2006, 01:04 AM Same here;)By the way ,you wanna race buggies?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=15232&d=1139807975
I definately agree!:):):) I think!):h
RickDLance 04-12-2006, 01:20 AM 4.3? Can I be on asphalt?
demp223 04-12-2006, 01:45 AM ok,then I get to go by air?
RickDLance 04-12-2006, 01:47 AM Damn, I just can't win!):h
bigdaddy650r 04-12-2006, 10:07 AM I have the Tx's airbox mod and I added a 4" metal dryer vent hose out of the bottom down to behind the bumper.
It feelS like the truck runs a lot better.
The insulating of the airbox to prevent heatsoak is very interesting!!
DuraBeast2 04-12-2006, 06:47 PM There is a product you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes that is a dual layer of aluminum with bubble pack in between the aluminum. I have it on the plywood on the roof of my house, reflects 97% of solar heat. Anyway, you can buy this stuff by the roll. It says on the package it is R-16. I attached it to the inside of my garage doors also. It helps keep garage cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
I am wondering if this product, which I think could be cut and glued(?) to the air box and possibly wrapped around the air intake tube(?) just might work. I have the TxCAI on order, but I just might give this a try. If it works, remember it is MY idea and can only be bought from me!!!:muahaha:
