Well i am thinking of geting a 4.3 diesel to drop in my S-10.I am looking for any info i can get on this engine and the problmes it had and maybe ways to fix them. Also i do know what it will take to swap it into my truck unless it has a PCM?Thanks

I would take a tape measure and see what it would take to put a 5.9 Cummins in it. People have put BBC's in them, so I imagine a Cummins might be shoehorned in. This eliminates the electronics issues and would be reasonably cheap.

Or do a rear engined Dmax with dual turbos. Put the engine in backwards, use a transfer case to drive the rear. You can do wheelies...

If you intend on using an Olds 4.3 Diesel, you should have no problems other than poor reliability, hard to find parts, and poor performance.

There was a class action suit that resulted in most the Olds diesels being converted to gas or paying the owners to scrap them.

This is a gasoline engine adapted to diesel use, and it failed miserably.

You would essentially find a Olds donor vehicle and just swap parts.

I would look for a european Toyota diesel powertrain and use that instead. Small diesel trucks and cars are very common in Europe.

Which every path you choose, a modern 4-cyl gas engine will provide more engine output for towing. You will never recoup the swaping costs in fuel savings, as they will be very small.

Yes i do understand that i will not recoup the money spent in fuel cost, but at the same time i am looking at droping around $500-1,000 just for a good engine for my truck so why not a diesel. The only oppions i have are another 2.8V6 or going to a 4.3V6 or a small block. All of which would have to be carbed and the price of geting a good 2.8 that is carbed is to high plus i still have to deal with the rod bearing probmles they have.As for the 4.3 and small block i would have to get another trans and more, also the price for a good runing one that i can trust with a 30 day warranty is round $500 plus with high miles around here.So i reather get a diesel and pay around the saem and get a engine that will last longer.Any ideas on what engine would be better then i can get parts for here and will fit? Thanks

I hope these ideas are not too far out there, but what about an old Mercedes turbo diesel? Me and my dad were talking about putting a diesel motor in a Mazda pickup truck for the shop awhile back. A couple ideas were a Benz diesel from a 80s Benz. He had one and we put over 300K miles on it before the rest of the car fell apart around it. Sounds like a Dodge huh? He also had a Volvo diesel that he wrecked but got rid of.
You might even be able to find a Japanese diesel.
I only bring up these ideas because you and McRat spoke about reliability. My dad also spoke about the engines in a Perkins generator, but they might not be turbocharged. Just some ideas. Hope they might help. There was even a Benz on Ebay for cheap
