Were is the best place to buy a OEM fuel filter? I have checked a number of parts stores and they want the same amount as the deal does for a off brand filter.

I buy my fuel filters from a local auto parts store. $34 for a WIX fuel filter. My OEM fuel filter had a Dana part number on it. I am not talking about the WIX number, but the internal Dana p/n was stamped lightly and in very small print in the metal. This number matched the lightly stamped internal part number of my OEM filter (Funny, it was even the same font). Anyway, I just stick with Dana as it appears to me this was the original equipment; WIX p/n is 33810. Anyone know for sure who the OEM supplier is to GM? Does Dana supply the fuel filters? (looked like it to me).

Every single Filter for the duramax is manufactured by racor in the same factory on the same assembly line. The only difference is the paint on the can. So even a fram is as good as anything else. Might as well by the cheapest.

I just got 3 fuel filters for $59.69 including shipping, from OilGuard.com. They look the same as the WIX filter I got at local parts store for $30.00 ea.

You should leave the OEM filter in play because of warranty purposes. Alot of us have went to a secondary filter to help with cleaning the fuel as the OEM does not do a proper job. Fleetguard makes a filter head to except the cat filter, part #142784-S. you can mount it on the frame close to the fuel tank. your fuel will be a lot cleaner if you chose to do so. Hope this helps

I am going to be doing the secondary fuel filter, but since the OEM filter does such a poor job of filtering, my real curiosity was why not just put a cat filter where the OEM used to be? will the OEM filter head accept the cat filter?

Dan, the OEM is a one-off design licensed to Racor that has a head that will not accept another brand/type of filter. All of the OEM filters on the market, no matter what name or brand they are sold under are Racor's made on the same line and painted differently. There have been some attempts to machine an adapter to fit between the OEM head and another type of filter, but nothing available. The location of the OEM makes clearance an issue with the head and exhaust manifold. This makes it easy to just leave the OEM as it is and install a secondary filter head and cartridge either before or after the OEM. There have been many threads and thousands of posts on this - search "fuel filter."
