I replaced brakes all the way around today, on my 2001 extended 6' 2500....wit 46523 miles on it...bought new.
I've had mainly highway miles on generally flat terrain, and my kid tells me I drive like a geezer, slow down, never tailgate and coast to the stop sign...
how is this performance...glazing on rotors was flaking off and inside was thorughly worn..couldn't turn them....
How is this performance...wondering if I am above average...
thanks

On my '02 I had 68,000 miles on it when I traded it in with the origional brakes. Never a problem. My '04 has 15k and from the feel of it I wont get half that on this one. Go figure http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I have 45,000 on my 01 with about 1/2 of them towing a 12,500 5er & mine are less than 1/2 worn.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

fragraf,
Odd as this may sound, sometimes you really need to use the brakes to preserve them. My truck has 55,000m on it and the brakes are still about 75%. I don't abuse the brakes, but give them a good run every now and then.
If you avoid using your brakes at all cost you will never heat them properly to burn off all of the corrosion. Heat can be a wonderful thing sometimes.
Also, when you have to make a hard stop and then sit (ie, braking fairly hard for a yellow light, etc), put the trans in neutral and then take your foot off the brakes. Let the pads and rotors cool properly. If you keep your foot on the brake the pad/rotor contact can eventually lead to warping (severe case) or a general fatigue of the rotors from the different cooling rates of the pads/rotors. I almost always put the truck in neutral regardless of how hard I've stopped.
One last thing... if you think you are coasting but are actually just braking slowly (and for a long time) coming to a stop, try using the brakes in intervals of heavier application. Remember, brakes are designed to be hot... gently dragging cold pads on cold rotors will do little short of shearing the surface off both.
Firm, short applications plus proper cooling = long brake life.

My 01 got 128,000 miles. Went to Powerslot rotors and Hawk pads (not the severe duty because of dusting), spent $650 delivered for everything and they are awesome.
