: ’04 LLY - trans upgrade needed with Edge and exhaust?

Hi all,

Was just reading another thread in the performance forum regarding the soon-to-be-released Edge for the '04 LLY.

Somebody mentined that I will need a trans upgrade for anything over 60hp.

Can anybody expand on that?

I was planning on doing a Magnaflow exhaust in the next week or so - and an Edge with Attitude once it becomes available. I tow a ~7500lb trailer, but intend to turn the Edge down to zero when I tow just to avoid any potential damage. Do I still need to do trans upgrades if I run the Edge at 5 just running around town? If so... what kind of upgrades? Serious, "rip into the trans" stuff, or just something simple like a shift kit?

Thanks,

Jim

If you take it easy and donot use the power you can get away without doing the transmission for awhile but, the more you use the power the sooner you will need an upgrade. If you let it go without the upgrade you would most likely need new C2 clutches and a shift kit.

Please tell me this is not true.. anything over 60hp. sounds like a 47RE for dodge..

Actually the 47RE holds up quite well. The converter is the culprit same as the 4R100 Ford, E40D Ford, 4L80E GM, Allison GM. The Dodge trans behind the Cummins does ok. The Ford trans leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest problem with the Allison is YOU,the driver. YOU add the horsepower and beat the Ally to death knowing that it needs help. You do it anyways; you wear out parts that did not need to be worn out. Why? Some people on this board have said you can flog the Ally if it is under 90 hp; so you guys go out and beat it to death without helping it. Any horsepower program will hurt your trans and that is a fact. Why is the trans the last one to get help? Race cars are built from the ground up which is the proper way. Some people build their vehichles from the engine down and wonder why they have failures.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Thanks for the info, but I own one. Full DTT!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif now it does OK.. before DTT, well not so much. HP is always the issue, but lets be real for the name Allison and the price. 60HP sucks. Edited by: turbo lcc
