That big round thing.... take it off... it needs to be gutted.

One end has a ring that needs to be pryed off with a screwdriver. Use a hammer, get the blade in about 1/8" and then twist the screwdriver till you here a cracking soung. That's the glue bound breaking loose. Do this all the way around till the ring breaks free.
http://dieselplace.com:82/forum/uploads/E13_03.jpg
This is what you are removing....
http://dieselplace.com:82/forum/uploads/ZZ1_04.jpg
Once the ring is off the guts tap right out with the handle of a hammer...

http://dieselplace.com:82/forum/uploads/51F_06.jpg
Once the guts are out you need to glue the one end back on. I used some quick set two part epoxy I had around.
Then you route the flange off both ends...

CTD 600 04-09-2004, 01:19 PM Ouch!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif A walkaround is always a good idea. Thanks for the pic's hoot. I need to find some time when my neighbor isn't using his leaf blower creating alot of dust around here. Does it sound any better than stock??

I forgot to mention the results...
No BS it's the sweetest sound. Whistles like a birdie but not overdone. Highly recommend it.

I thought you said....."NO MODS" on the new truck? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

CTD 600 04-09-2004, 01:26 PM oh yeah, one more thing. Did you also remove the white air flow director thing that was inside the rubber intake elbow going into the turbo?
No I didn't remove the deflector. I think that should stay.
Tom... This one is sorta warranty freindly and doesn't cost a dime. I am looking to do 5" exhaust.
CTD 600 04-09-2004, 05:07 PM Just performed my mod this afternoon. Took about 2 hours to complete. I didn't have access to a router so I used a jig saw very carefully.
The truck indeed sounds sweet. You hear alot more air flow and it isn't extremely loud at all. It's how a turbo should sound. I'm very happy with the results. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Big P 04-09-2004, 10:09 PM I took the ring out of my turbo a couple of weeks ago and it sounds awesome with my ATS exhaust. I think I drove around for two days with the radio off and the passenger side window down.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif It sounds the best when I push in the clutch and let the turbo spool down.
I don't know about you guys but thsi mornings drive my mileage display is now hovering at 23-25 mpg
Mackin 04-12-2004, 09:24 AM I don't know about you guys but thsi mornings drive my mileage display is now hovering at 23-25 mpg
Well, YA,considering you "gotta" keep her under 65/70 ....
Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif
Yea POS.
Gotta take it in for a 70 mph driveline vibration.
Duke... I mean Mac... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif Let me know when you hit 70,000 miles, then show me history and reciepts http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Fireman 04-12-2004, 10:43 AM Is there anything like that that can be done to the Duramax to increase turbo flow?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
I already have an aFe Stage II intake on it...

Er~ so your the high mileage king now huh !!!
Hey DC didn't expect the average HOOT to be cruising a in-line six banger at 70+ MPH considering low end grunt high MPG, longevity is where the tower-hauler needs the Chip delivering power band at ,cruising to work ...
Guess drive-line alignment-balance wasn't big on the Gotta DO list .... Keep her at 60 other wise she'll just vibrate to death ,Cummin apart they say ...

Fireman... there isn't much else you can do.
MAc.... jealousy won't get you there.
Got 5" on the way. I'm just doin some light mods for free breathing. Some "looker" accessories and I'll be just driving it. Like the DMax... gotta love the diesel experience. The Cummins is a little cruder. but not as loud as the old days when I couldn't take it. This one is real quiet at idle... about the same as a DMax... we compared with chevmiester's the other day. They almost sounded the same. But when you run them.. mines louder.
By the way.. 5" straight... no muffler
Cut the driveline bustin MAC..... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif how many problems did GM have with launch shudder? My GMC had the driveshaft replaced so I don't feel that bad. I'll have more miles on mine in a year than you put on in two years with that Commuter Queen dually of yours http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Edited by: hoot
CTD 600 04-12-2004, 12:33 PM From the looks, it seems like a different airbox. Can't really see if the restricting canister is there or not? The nice thing about the "hoot" mod is that is uses the OEM airbox and parts. Nothing looks modified from the outside. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Haven't seen much in the way of MPG increase... Although I know the mod couldn't hurt the MPG. Paying 2.35 a gallon for diesel here is kinda restricting.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
5" no muffler! I'm looking forward to seeing how that comes out!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Have you taken a look at the, well what I think is the cat. Benieth the drop pipe from the turbo there is a monolithic shaped pipe. It looks about the same that what is on the Dmax. If not the catalitic converter what is it... and are you going to take it off?
It is a different air box that mounts in the same location and utilizes an AFE cone filter.
04 HO doesn't have the monolith Cadillac Converter. But you have 4" downpipe to help make up for it.
I'm getting a 4" downpipe, which, BTW, is the size of the turbo outlet on the 04 and 04.5's. So it's shortly gonna be 4" coming out of the turbo, quickly opening up to 5" all the way out.
Aluminized and welded-on hangers. $380 at my door.
Maybe a nice 6" down turn tip
CTD 600 04-12-2004, 08:28 PM I think the 04.5...well at least mine has the monolith Cadillac Converter. I'll have to take a picture of it. Maybe becuase i'm in California? But I thought the trucks were 50 state emmisions. I'm sure it's a "600" also.
Yes it does. They added it on the "600"
CTD 600 04-12-2004, 08:38 PM Hoot, are you going to remove that or keep it on??
I don't have one.
2004 Cummins with the HO 305/555 has a 3 1/2" downpipe and no catalytic converter. The tailpipe after the muffler is 4"
2004.5 Cummins with the HO 325/600 "600" engine DOES have a catalytic converter but also has a full 4" exhaust from the turbo back.
I assume they went with full 4" to compensate for the cat.
Since I have a 2004 HO 305/555... I have no catEdited by: hoot
CTD 600 04-13-2004, 01:33 AM Here's a pic of the catalytic converter that's on my rig. It doesn't look very restricting. Wonder what's inside?
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/A37_MVC-558F.JPG
Lawnboy 04-13-2004, 07:27 AM WOW, no heat shield? The GM's have full length exhaust heat shields.
Anyway....Inside is a real fine honeycomb monolithic brick like substance. Almost ceramic like.
You start making ANY kinda smoke, it'll surely get clogged with particulates.

On your modification taking out the baffles in the air intake to the Turbo, did it change HP and Torque or just sounds better?
Nice new grill on your truck. Those barr grills look much better. I installed aftermarkets cloud rider grill inserts on top of mine with the insert grill between the tow hooks at the bottom. I was getting a lot of little stones stuck in the rad.
CTD 600 04-16-2004, 12:37 AM I can't speek for increase of HP/Tq but I can say that the sound it produces is awsome!!! Any increase of airflow is a good thing! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
Canadian... I would expect some performance change on anything you do that enhances airflow. I don't really feel a difference either way but like CTD 600 said... it sounds real good and I like knowing it's almost wide open from the air cleaner to the turbo.
The grill I picked up at the Dodge dealer. It's the one that comes with the Laramie. Takes about 1/2 hour tops to swap them out. They use these plastic rivets that have a little plastic pin in the center. Push the center pin thru and the rivet falls out.
I had the Lund Stainless screen on my GMC. I liked it alot. Worked great and really looked good.

I routinely drive my 2004 Dodge 600 Cummins, quad cab, 4x4 automatic at speeds ranging from 80-90mph and this truck, considering it's a 3/4 ton, has a "Smooth" ride at this speed. Absoulty no vibrations on this end, unlike my 2003 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton 4x4 I traded in.... When it rained, the window seals leaked, more so when you drove through a car wash, and the vibration from it was soo horrible that when you were driving at 80mph the ash tray would vibrate open..
[QUOTE=hoot]Yea POS.

Seems to be a little worse in the morning. On the drive home it's hardly noticeable so temperature seems to be a factor. Above 75 it's smooth as class.
Diesel_4_me 04-21-2004, 10:30 AM Hmm.. Well anyone know about Mercedes's Particulate filtration system..
From what I remember they have a canister type filter.. The Engine management system increases fuel flow every once in a while to increase the exhaust temperature and "BURN" all the particulates away. Interesting eh?
Hoot.. Is that thing you removed some kind of quietening device??? Like how gasses have the intake box.. And Looking at that mesh.. looks like its supposed to prevent turbulence in the air before it gets to the turbo.. Sure it wont reduce efficiency?

Those particulate filters are pure tree hugger mandates designed to clean up the air while using more fuel. Somehow there seems to be something wrong with that picture.
The thing I pulled out of the intake tube is a silencer baffle. It removes some of the whistle. I know it's ok to remove it is a Dodge "value added feature". I was told other application do not have the baffle. If anything removing it will remove turbulence I would think. There is an insert in the elbow for turbulence control that I did not remove.
