: touchy topic?
jasontrucks76 04-06-2006, 04:10 PM I would like to know what kind of oil I should run in my new truck? 2006 Lbz. I know everyone has an opinion but what I need to know is the prefered oil by GM. I have never owned a diesel before and really dont know the differance.:) In my gas engines I have run Havoline for years and have had good luck. Im not into synthetic unless that is what GM says is the best. I had a Frd V-10 and it took a semi synthetic and I had no trouble but that is what was recomended by Frd.
Thank you for the help:D

That said......in my previous I ran shell rotella in the summer(I get it free) and shaffers suppreme in the winter(better cold flowing)
Plan to go with shell in the summer and mobil one in the winter or maybe just mobil 1 year round. Extending the drain intervall and changing the oil filter and toping it off at the recomended change time(by GM)
I've had good results with moble 1 :)
jasontrucks76 04-06-2006, 04:30 PM Ok but what are the weights of these oils?

Your owner's manual will give you the GM specifications.
Idle_Chatter 04-06-2006, 07:01 PM I've run a few different oils in my truck in 4 years and 121,000 miles. Mostly Rotella-T in both "flavors" 15W40 dino and 5W40 semi-syn. I've gotten good service and great analysis numbers out of all the oils I've run. Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W40 dino has been good, also. I'm about 4,000 miles from changing and testing my first run of Mobil 1 Truck&SUV (the OLD 5W40 diesel rated one). Hopefully the new Mobil 1 Turbodiesel will be on the shelves by then.
Jason, if you let us know your location, we would better know what kind of climate you operate in. The answer might be different for Alaska or North Dakota than for Florida or Southern California.
You want an oil that has a CI-4 or CI-4+ rating. In synthetics, the viscosity could be 5w-40, and in non-synthetic, 15w-40.
Popular 15w-40 oils include Rotella T, Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300, and others.
Popular 5w-40 oils include products by Mobil 1 (though the kind available through consumer networks is now hard to get as they are going through a rebranding as mentioned above), Shell Rotella Synthetic, and a synthetic from Valvoline.
And undoubtedly somebody here will recommend Amsoil.
RichLockyer 04-06-2006, 09:51 PM Most non-synthetics are 15w40. Under extremely cold conditions, you can go to a 5w30, but it MUST carry an API CH-4 or CI-4 rating. A straight "gasoline engine" CF/SL/SM is not good enough.
The only synthetic currently in stores and readily available is Rotella 5w40.
Mobil Delvac-1 is also 5w40, but is a little harder to find (truck stops?)
Schaeffers makes a 5w40 synth.
Amsoil makes a 15w40 synth.
ALL of these oils are "within grade" and API spec for your owner's manual for all but extremely cold conditions.

Don't all the new Durabux come from the factory with Delvac 1 syn. in them?
diesel66 04-07-2006, 05:38 PM Don't all the new Durabux come from the factory with Delvac 1 syn. in them?
I would guess they have dino oil from the factory. Anyone know who makes the GM flavor of 15w40?
Eddysel 04-07-2006, 07:16 PM My dealer always used Quaker State in my old '02 D'Max. I would assume that is the GM flavor?

GM flavor is Flavor of the Week, otherwise known as "lowest bidder"
My dealer stocks "GM" and M1 5w30 for cars, and Havoline 15w40 for oil burners.

15w-40 but not synthetic the only syn in the 2006s is in the rear differential.

I believe that is the corvette. I also think that it is Mobile 1

Correct.
jasontrucks76 04-08-2006, 05:10 PM Thank you Guys :) I at least know the names and what the dif. are now. I Live in South dakota and the withers and not too cold for the normal. But we do get about two to three weeks a year of -10 to -30:eek: But that is not the normal. From the local guys I talked to it seems like the majorty of them use Rotella and Delvac. Ill do a little looking around for the price and see what I can come up with.
Once again Thanks
:D
RichLockyer 04-09-2006, 12:10 AM Given that the 5w40 is perfectly fine to run in warmer climates, any time you've got consistent temps holding below 50-60 for more than a few days, I'd switch to 5w40... then back to 15w40 (always synthetic for me though) when it warms up.
A lot of guys just make it a habit of running Delvac or Rotella 5w40 synth all winter and return to Rotella-T 15w40 Dino for the rest of the year.
That saves a few bucks and still provides good protection when you really need the good cold-pour capabilities of synthetic.
killerbee 04-09-2006, 12:24 AM I would like to know what kind of oil I should run in my new truck?
pends on what you plan to do with it. IMO
With temperatures as low as -10 to -30 at times in winter, I would definitely go 5w-40 in the winter. In Canada, they even have 0-30 and 0-40 synthetics for winter use.
killerbee 04-09-2006, 09:50 AM I agree.
48ford 04-15-2006, 07:30 PM Just bought oil from my local jobber for my first oil change. Lo and behold, they sell AC Delco 15-40 which turned out to be cheaper than any other dino oil. Shouldn't have a warranty problem with that oil! :D
