I received a call today from a guy that wanted information on a secondary fuel filter kit. He said his 01, with 123K, was in the shop having all eight injectors replaced. He went on to say that they were plugged so bad at the inlet fitting that it wouldn't run. I asked how often he changed the filter and where he bought his fuel. He said he changed the filter religiously every 10K and tried to buy his fuel at high volume stations. He carries an extra 40 gallons in a bed mounted tank. You are not going to believe these photos. They are the last five at this address. Later! Frank

Frank,

The link doesn't work, at least for me. What was plugged up the injectors? If he went 123K miles and then all of a sudden something plugged up, maybe the filter was defective.

Man, what is that stuff? Is it a biologic? It's not rust and it looks like strawberry jelly or something you see in a medical book under strange diseases you don't ever want.

I do sleep better being triple filtered.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Wow,

looks like he got some real bad fuel!!!!!!!!!!!! I would say that those injectors are plugged all right. Looks like the thing tried to filter some road kill!!!

Try the link again guys. I don't understand all I know about posting photos on Yahoo. The junk in the bottom is rust. It got a little ATK in the filter before I retrieved it. Plain old dirt near as I can tell. Later! Frank

At least half the set were plugged solid and the rest didn't look much better. I was going to take the injector apart but it was put together very tight. I didn't want to break it and have to pay the core charge. I am going to try to get a peek inside his bed tank tomorrow. He hauls farm and construction equipment all over. I suspect he has a ton of dirt in one of his tanks. I hope this helps some make up their mind about installing a second filter. Later! Frank

Looks pretty bad! I wonder if it is an algae growing at the bottom of the filter? Need George Morrison to look at this.

Did he use any additive? emulsifier vs demulsifier.

Alan, I only talked to the guy for a couple minutes on the phone before I picked up the injector and filter. He called to ask me to install A Racor on his new LLY. He hasn't seen the filter yet. I will get more info tomorrow. I would almost bet he is growing bugs in the auxiliary tank. Later! Frank

Gosh, I have looked at hundreds and hundreds of injectors and these are without a doubt the worst I have ever seen. I have never seen anything even closely resembling these injectors.
That said, I strongly suspect a combination of both microbial, high levels of both contaminants and water. In other words some very, very bad diesel fuel used over an extended period of time.
I have seen injectors somewhat resembling these and they have been from farm tanks that did not have high turnover, were not well protected from environment; all of which allows particulate contamination, water ingestion and resultant microbial infection.
All of these factors combine to create abrasive, clogging, acidic fuel. The worst of the worst.

I have to agree bad fuel .. Almost as if he had his own source of fuel like a tank buried on his property for construction or farming without adequate filtering .... Massive microbial infection.....

Yuck ..... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Throw Up.gif

George, I asked him if he had his own tank. He said no. He then told me about the 40 gal. bed tank. I suspect the problem is there. I hope the filler hole is big enough to get a good look see. We had trouble with algae in one of our 20K diesel tanks at work years ago. As I remember it was a rusty brown color. This stuff has a little ATF in it. It was in the filter barrel at the dealers and had trans filters in on top of it. I will follow up tomorrow. This should prove once and for all that you cannot depend on one filter to protect our fuel systems. Later! Frank

The Duramax is back running again. The bill was $4200. Sure glad that one is not mine. The tank in the back is made of aluminum with a hand pump. Other that some water drops in the bottom it is pretty clean. No signs of anything growing. That junk must have come from his main tank. Later! Frank
