: Lots of soot in oil?

I just changed my oil and what I saw come out looked so nasty, I should have sent it in for a sample.

I had 3100 miles on the following (6500 miles on the truck total):
Chevron Delo 400 15w40
Purolator PremiumPlus Oil Filter

The oil was a murky black and had a noticeable amount of soot in it. I know oil is supposed to come out darker than when it went in, but this just looked like something could be wrong. Even my father commented on how bad the oil looked.

I have changed the oil in my Cummims 5.9L and my 7.3L Powerstroke many times and have never seen anything this bad. Even when I changed this truck at 3400 miles, it wasnt this bad.

I don't tow at all and my average trip is about 20 miles. Just lots of "spirited" driving with the Quadzilla.

I changed the oil to Amsoil Synthetic Blend 15W40 with a Fleetguard filter and plan to change that at 10,000 miles.

Is this a normal thing for the Dmax trucks? If not, next time Blackstone or amsoil will be having a sample sent to them.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Programmers and boxes will soot your oil quickly!I also assume you have a EGR equipped truck, another source.

If I don't jack my truck for a oil change to completely drain the pan my oil is black right after start up!

Better in the oil than sitting in the pan or under the valve covers.

Ditto.
I ramp the front of the truck, which drains better, but I also "flush" one quart of Rotella 5w40 through before closing the Fumoto and dropping in the 10qts of Amsoil 15w40.

Really, it's not THAT big of a deal... the little oil remaining in the pan is not going to be a serious contamination... we've got a 10qt capacity and there might be, what, 1/2 pint left in there? That's only a 2% contamination, and suspending soot is what the HD oil is designed to do.
The EGR systems in our trucks really plays hell with the appearance, but oil analysis at 10k on synthetic consistently shows that it's still good to go.

Even with dino, 3k oil changes are a waste of money and resources (though I do advocate "break in" changes at 2k and 5k).
The GM oil life monitor is based on non-synthetic and even IT says that we're good for 7500-10k.
Pesonally, I run synthetic and go 8-10k... wherever I happen to be when it's a convenient weekend to change the oil and the DIC is still above 10% remaining.

Remember... this is NOT a Saturn with a 4qt capacity and a filter that's too small to hold enough water to brush your teeth with... this is a truck with 10 quarts and a full 1qt filter.

Have you considered an EGR blocker plate? Pull off your intake manifold for a visual inspection and I bet you will...

The EGR is unplugged on my truck. Has been that way since the day I bought it.

I always let the oil drain out for about 15 min and run about a quart of some Rotella or whatever diesel oil I have laying around to flush out the excess.

I plan to go with longer intervals after the truck hits 10,000 miles.

Hmmmmmmmmm, think I'd still block it. I think the plates are only like $12. Just one more cheap solution to make it definitely taken care of. Mechanical things are "yes" and "no" with me but electronics are "maybe" and "probably". :)

You have to raise the nose to get a complete drain.Flushing a quart through unlifted wont push the oil out of the recessed part of the pan.

For the 15 min I let it drain, the front is jacked up.

I just ordered an EGR Blocker plate to COMPLETELY eliminate that.

I have a plate and a bypass filter. My oil doen't start getting dark on the stick until about 4K. At 10k when I change it it is pretty black. The analysis didn't make any negative comments on soot. Diesel oil is suppose to be black, not this wimpy brown crud that comes out of a gasser.
