I pulled up next to another Duramax yesterday and we both looked at each other and floored it natural instinct i guess but any ways he let off a little above the speed limit and to my surprise the blow off sounded more like an import than compared to stock sure you guys have heard it, sounds like a horse lol must be muffled through the air box or something. Dose anyone know how to make them do that is there a hose to pull? and dose it hurt anything if i do it ?

Theres no blow off valve on a Dmax. What you probably heard was turbo bark...and its really bad for the turbo. Not hearing it is a GOOD thing. :)

Unless he had a blow off valve installed.

good point Tony...although because he said "sounds like a horse" im inclined to think its turbo bark.

kind of a fast "fubp-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup" noise, is that right Ripper?

Then he must have added a blow off valve or maybe he blew off an intercooler pipe :D

How do you add a BOV to a diesel? :wtf1:

theres no throttle plate to stop the flow so no BOV needed. Even if you added one, it will never vent.

True there is no throttle plate but it will still bark the turbo when you let off under a high boost situation. Lots of diesels with aftermarket turbos run BOVs.

Hmmm, talked to alot of diesel guys and never heard of this.

Still, doesn't make sense, the only reason you need a BOV is to vent the boost before it slams into the throttle plate. You guys don't have one, when you chop the gas, the boost just goes back up the intake, so theortically, a BOV won't even work.

Guess I'll chalk it up to learning.

i have no idea but i can tell you from how much he picked up on my truck that it is not stock lol so maybe it is a aftermarket turbo

Turbo bark is a result of excess pressure with no place to go. You can easily bark a turbo so a blow off valve will and does work. Lots of Cummins guys run BOV's with their big turbos.

PPE has a kit for the Dmax, if I'm not mistaken

So does BD Power. I can't find it on their site but it is in their price list. http://www.bd-power.com/pdf/Pricing/Retail/US/Web%20Price%20Book%20-%20US%20Retail.pdf

If he slowed down right after you heard the BOV type sound then it was probably his blowing off an IC tube. Just happened to my buddies dually, he running 30psi and he mashed it getting onto the freeway next to a wall and all the sudden I hear a BOV sound like you would expect from a turbo gasser, just like my Turbo'd Integra GSR. The truck started to slow right after and I looked at him puzzled like......what the hell do you got under the hood man....something your not telling me.......but it was just the IC tube blowing off under boost.

Wondering how the hell you run a BOV on a diesel as well? I have no desire to but, I don't' see the point. I can't imagine it would even function since it does not pull a vacuum.

I don't know much about diesels, but i'd imagine that if engine RPMs drop rapidly and the turbo is still spooling quickly, it would cause a rapid build up of pressure in the intake. A BOV would help vent the excess boost to prevent "turbo bark" as others have described.

Imports also blow off at a much lower PSI, I have duel BOV's by they are set for 65lbs):h It take a lot of fuel and time to build up that kind of pressure:D

Set them for 60... then go for it... when they go off, make sure there is a pedestrian nearby.... you have never seen anyone grab sidewalk so fast in your life!:D

I'll attempt to explain how and why the BOV works on a diesel, a turbo bark occurs when the backpressure, caused by a rapid decrease in throttle, pulls the air backwards resulting in a backspin of the vanes of the turbo. Adding a BOV allows this backward flowing air to be released before it gets back to the turbo. This is how the "bark" is avoided. As a result you get the gushing air sound.

Ryan may still have the animations I made a few months back I can't seem to find it right now, but I'll try to dig them up and post them if anyone is interested.

If that's the case, it almost sounds like a BOV would be a good idea. I can bark my turbo just by trying to get unstuck in the snow...

You could in theory avoid it by letting out of throttle slower but in most cases it isn't possible. ;)

The first one is of a turbo bark. It isn't completely accurate because the vanes should reverse direction when the "bark" occurs. But when I was making these I had a pretty tight deadline. :)

This one of the BOV is moderately accurate.

I should also note that the original picture was taken from howstuffworks.com and then modified for animation.

Thanks, excellent pics.

I don't need a diesel to scare pedestrians, I just pin my van and when I see a ped, I chop the gas and my loud BOV vents-they just jump, hehehehehe, not expecting a turbocharged Minivan.
