A friend is looking at a used '03 that he thinks has a different instrument panel in it. Is there a way to check how many miles are on it besides what the odometer says? Is the mileage stored in a computer somewhere? Will a Tech II show something different than the odometer?

If you change out the cluster, then obviously you will have 0 miles, but the truck stores this in about 12 other places (or so I have been told). That is why the give you that Yellow sticker to place on your door to write the current mileage on it. They can run the Tech 2 on it and it will tell how many miles are actually on the truck but from what I have heard they have to run a certain program or it will not show up. (Just what I was told by a GM service tech)

Thanks, that is what I suspected since the clusters are cheap and easy to program. I'll see if he can get it checked.

I just asked the serice manager at a local Chevy dealer the same question and he told me there was no way to tell how many miles were on it other than the speedo. He said the mileage was only stored on the cluster.
