Here is a little project I welded up. Had the Drawtite turnover hitch on the 04 but did not like the safety chain "U" bolts. I didn't want to drill 4 holes in the bed for them. Here are some pics of the 06 install.

Looks like a novel idea, but kinda defeats the purpose of the saftey chains doesn't it? You are now relying on the single pin holding the ball in the hitch. The original "U" bolts went into the hitch frame, didn't they?

I guess it will still work if the hitch failure was that the latch didn't hold and the trailer uncoupled from the truck.

I'm thinking the weak spot has to be the thinest part of the ball. I have safety cables going from the chain hook up rings on the hitch to the tie down loops in the front of the bed. I had the same thought that you did and decided on the cables for a bit of extra safety.

From the looks of it now it can no longer be a Turnove Ball. What do you fill the hole with when not towing?.

A healthy does of grease, and I just keep the ball in there. Only thing we use that truck for is hauling the horses and transportation. The 94 diesel is our workhorse.

I checked into the law regarding safety chains on a gooseneck trailer here in ohio last year. According to the dot supervisor I talked with there has to be 5 separate attachment points to be legal. 1- ball itself
2- safety chain
3- safety chain
4- light hook up
5- breakaway cable.

The safety chains cant be hooked together, and they cant be attached to the ball. Not trying to cut your idea down, just my .02
