: Allison parts in a Dodge Cummins?
Rollingthunder 03-31-2006, 09:00 PM A friend of mine is a devoted Dodge fan. Tomorrow he trades in his 1/2 ton hemi for a 3/4 Cummins diesel. He has more than a bit of "tranny envy" and tells me yesterday that the tranny in the Cummins is " . . . really mostly made by Allison. They just can market it yet."
Where does he get off with that? I have never heard or read anything like that. Is he halucinating or just wishing too hard?
Power Joke Killer 04-01-2006, 01:53 AM If it looks like a allison, if it shifts like a allison, its a (real) allison. While I have not looked at a dodge tranny lately Im sure it does none of the above like a allison. So I call Bull $hit.
DURAtotheMAX 04-01-2006, 02:08 AM HA HA. Tell your friend thats what he WISHES. :)
There is not one Allison part in a Dodge.
RichLockyer 04-01-2006, 02:11 AM Find out what he's smoking and send me a baggie.
It sounds like he's got some REALLY good stuff!
elkhunter01 04-01-2006, 08:37 AM I have a friend that was telling me that he has a buddy that works for allison and that they do cut some of the gears for the dodge tranny. True I don't know but that is what I heard.

Every single part inside a (real) Allison has the little Allison roundal symbol on them...Id have to see pics of inside a Dodge tranny..

One question. Does it slip or limp like an Allison?????????
DURAtotheMAX 04-01-2006, 12:17 PM This thread WILL stay on topic. Otherwise I wont hesitate to close it.
Rollingthunder 04-01-2006, 11:06 PM I guess it makes sense that Allison could make some parts for virtually any company that needs quality machined steel parts. I think my friend doesn't recognize that "parts-is-parts" without the overall engineering, design and manufacturing.
Thanks for confirming for me what I believed: Allison tranny is only available in GMC and Chevrolet brands.

And the M1A1 Abrams :D
Seriously... we hear this all of the time from promponents of "the other guys"... Our Allison isn't a "real" Allison, their trans is an Allison, etc....
mx2702001 04-02-2006, 04:11 PM Well i seen some small parts in dodge trans that were made by delphi or Ac delco thats about as close to GM parts in a dodge i have seen
RichLockyer 04-02-2006, 07:00 PM Makes ya' kinda' wonder don't it?):h
scottg 04-03-2006, 05:26 PM Years ago Dodge and Gm shared many different parts. All manufactures are out to make money, they can and will sell to who ever will pay for them. Dodge is supposed to have the rights to the Cummins 5.9 for their trucks. I see that Ford is putting the same little motor in their trucks "F650". I saw this years ago in the F700 trucks. This makes me wonder just how good the PSD really is. Why would they use the motor that they try so hard to beat? Dodge may not have the finest trans, they may not have crature comforts that Ford and GM have. But they do have a good motor. I sold my 02 Druamax / Alli. I now drive a Dodge again with auto. I still pull the same loads, drive on the same roads and still drive the same way. I don't have 5 gears now. I have somewhat engine braking with the 05-48RE. The major difference to me is that I get to drive my Dodge pulling 25K and make some money, not drive the Dmax to the dealer every month for a sick tranny. The Ally is a good tranny, but not bullet proof and not with it's share of problems. Ford and GM should have put the 7/70,000 warranty behind their tranny like Dodge and then maybe it would not have cost me $1500 each visit to the dealer.

I agree my brother has an 03 cummins and we've nearly literally beat the crap outta that motor and trans. Its been through a lot. Everything that everyone would say that oh the Dodge trans will fry out on you before you know it. I'll say it that that dodge trans is a lot tougher than people think.
scottg 04-04-2006, 07:21 AM I myself have not had any problem with my 48RE trans. I'm not really worried if I do. My major reason for going with the Dodge auto was the warranty. I've got 7 years or 70,000 mi. to beat the crap out of that tranny. I won't keep a truck long enough to put 70K on it. Then again, I see that Dodge has gone back to the 3/36,000 warranty on the power train. Getting back to the parts thing. Just about anything that you buy today will have parts are made by a competitor or at the very least use the same parts as the competition. Regardless of what the public think, the big boys know how to market and make money. Money is the name of the game. When Allison sell a trany to Peterbuilt, do you think they give a rats *ss of what engine is going to be in front of it? The last time that I checked, none of the big three made any of there roller bearings. That means, that yes a Ford and a Chevy can be rolling down the highway on the same brand wheel bearings. It don't matter what kind of engine or tranny you have. You don't have good wheel bearings, you won't go far. LOL.
cummins#1 04-05-2006, 12:51 AM I hope like he!! that my 06 dodge dosn't have any part of a allison in it. You can understand why I feel the way I do. My 04.5 duramax w/ allison tranny had to have the world famous, so called bullet proof tranny replaced w/ 2500 miles on it and never had a trailer behind it. ( that is not a misspelling. twenty five hundred miles). Yes you guest it. I got rid of it and purchased a dodge with that real sh!!ty 48re trans in it (I have owned 2 of them since) and never had a problem with either of them. So if you think your allison is the sh!!T. So do I. A pile of shiit.
Rollingthunder 04-06-2006, 09:19 PM My friend picked up his Ram 3/4 Cummins this week. Of course he is thrilled like Christmas morning . . . after all, he did get a new truck.
Its a nice looking truck with silver paint, leather and that Cummins diesel.
He traded in a hemi 1/2 ton.
We went for a ride in it and I made sure that I said all the right things 'cause he likes it and it really doesn't matter what I think (or anyone else for that matter.)
But, just for the sake of sharing my thoughts, I feel compelled to tell you that I didn't care much for it. It seemed VERY loud inside, the seats are too hard for me, there is not enough room in the back seat (quad cab) and I think the fake wood trim on the dash is cheap looking. (But I hate fake wood in any vehicle)
On the "plus" side it did feel very tight and put together . . . much more so than I expected.
To each his own. Having lots of choices is a good thing. Just glad he didn't get to choose my truck.

99PSD 04-06-2006, 09:48 PM i have heard the same bull**** about the torque shift in the 6.0l, i didnt bother to argue with the kid, i just walked away, in my opionin, a trans behind a diesel is a freak thing, some go, some dont, it doesnt matter who makes them, ive seen super dutys go 300k on stock trans, and others go 50k, just like gm and dodge, its all a gamble
