I don't think the HD designation came out until the new Duramax's 2001(?) came out.

Welcome Jake, 8th letter of VIN "F" is non EGR, HD engine which would tend to say it's HD go to RPO codelist in FAQ sticky & your glovebox for the rest of the info to confirm HD status, do you have 8 bolt wheels that is another clue.
Once you learn to navigate the site update your signature with info you find in the glove box per welcome note sticky in mine.

Your GVW will have something to do with it. Can't remember what mine is off hand but when I changed the front pads, I needed the largest ones they had because of the GVW. That is how I figured out mine was HD.

RPO list will give equipment particulars that would qualify, but I think Akila is also correct the HD designator badge wasn't out until DMAXes came out, even though HD equipment was available in 6.5 2500 & 3500 truck packages, have to check RPO equipment rating HD would have bigger brakes, larger GVRWR rating, tow capacity, etc.

My 98 2500 was a HD the GVW was 8200lbs (ish) and a regular 2500 GVW is around 7000lbs(ish) Look inside your drv door for your GVW

my 1997 K2500 is the HD version before there was an HD. Here's what to look for.....
RPO codes -
L65 - The High Output non-emissions 6.5
C6P - Heavy Duty Suspension
8th Digit in VIN is F, this confirms the L65 RPO code
If you have 8 lugs, this confirms the C6P RPO. Also as another way to tell, with the 8 lugs, if you rear diff has 14 bolts on the cover, and if its not round like a circle but looks more like it has 6 sides....

Mine follows these guidelines and has an 8600 lb GVW.
