: Wanting Performance Upgrades
3500on40s 03-30-2006, 04:55 PM Ok so heres the scoop. I just bought a '93 K3500 4x4 Crew Cab Long Bed. It sits on 39.5" Iroks and has a SAS swap. The 6.5L is comepletely stock.
I'm wanting more power and more towing capabilites(i know its more in gearing, tranny, and tow package). I just want a nasty *** diesel truck. This is my first diesel. I've always had performance gassers but never a diesel. Let me know what you guys suggest.
I'll be able to pretty much buy anything I want and have it installed for free. Perks of going in the army and having a wonderful father that is an ASE cert Master Tech.
So far about the only thing I know I'm going to do is 4" Exhaust from SS Diesel Supply.
Turbine Doc 03-30-2006, 05:38 PM Welcome to the site, spend some time in FAQ sticky's at top of the 6.5 forum and linked in my signature
3500on40s 03-30-2006, 05:39 PM I've seen those. Just peeked over them. Haven't really dug through them but will do.
Turbine Doc 03-30-2006, 05:44 PM Be prepared to spend a LOT of time in there, more stuff in there than in a GM tech manual, basics but required reading to make best use of any additional advise given
Akila 03-30-2006, 05:46 PM Yup, your 1st mod should be your exhaust, dont forget the 3" downpipe, nothing bigger will fit. I had a chip, PMD cooler, had the 97' cooling upgrades ready, til I sold the Truck, also had bought Gear Drive from Kennedy & sold that too. Removed the airbox snorkel. A pillar gauges. Needed additional cooling & was looking into an Intercooler, never had the $$. Oh also put in the #9 resistor when I installed the PMD. Was also investigating the Marine injectors. Lots of stuff you can do, or be like me, Sell it & buy a Duramax!!):h

DMAX troll alert

Well my exhaust will be the following: 4" exhaust from SSD, 3" DP, 2.5" Crossover, No Cat or Muffler
I've been looking into PMD cooler, '97 upgrade, but can't find a chip for the '93. Basically I've looked into everything that SS Diesel offers and a few other specialty 6.5L sites offer.
I see you said gear drive? is it just a normal gear drive from a 350 SBC.
I want this truck to last me and it already has 177K on it so I want reliability also.
About the only thing this truck will ever pull will be a 30-38 foot Baja boat. Gotta save up for that though, but I have 4 years to do that, thanks to a 4 year contract from the US ARMY
Akila 03-30-2006, 06:46 PM The Gear drive is a specialty item only for the 6.5. Kennedy Diesel sells them. I believe the brand is DSG.
gmctd 03-30-2006, 07:41 PM You don't have a PMD - you gotta mechanical DB2-4911 IP.
Getcher exhaust, EGT and Boost gages, and you can crank it up for extra ponies.
Getcher '97 cooling upgrade so ya don't crack the block open
You will need a charge-air cooler, which will be yer biggest outlay - but if you want real sustained 190hp, ya gotta have it.
Word up.............
BTW - ferget the girly-man 4" exhaust - run dual 4" turn-out stacks up thru the front of the bed, for a really bad big-rig dually look - imo, of course..........
3500on40s 03-30-2006, 11:34 PM yea I hate stacks on anything other than a dodge.
Thanks for the heads up on the PMD. I'm new to the diesel world so I'm learning as much as I can.
gmctd 03-31-2006, 12:00 AM Nix on the stacks, then
Might also spend some time in the 6.2 forum, where the mech inj trucks are, pick up some pointers over there - timing, turning up the pump, injectors, etc
Same engine, same procedures, only you got puff and they don't ;)
bow-tie-guy 03-31-2006, 12:25 AM Getcher exhaust, EGT (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/autolink.php?id=43&script=showthread&forumid=21) and Boost gages, and you can crank it up for extra ponies.
Do not forget the gauges! Especially if you do the resistor! This is the first thing I would recomend you do. High EGT shouldn't be on the things to do in life list.
DieselPro 03-31-2006, 04:58 AM Folks he's got a 93 model. No chips, no resistor, no pmd. He's got the good mechanical stuff. You know, the kind you can turn up with a screw. Do a search for turning up the fuel on a 6.2. Several good articles on the net. Think you'll get more than enough fuel than your engine can digest properly.
http://www.flashoffroad.com/Diesel/injectionpump/mechanicalpump.htm
Do the fuel increase thru the side cover.
DieselPro tip: It's easy to find the fuel screw by removing the oil filler tube and get the cam timing pin in the 12 O'clock position.
The screw should be in the "window" on the pump.
Start with the exhaust, then add gauges. Boost, Pyro and trans temp. Pick up a Turbomaster from Heath Diesel so you can build more boost. Then, open up that IP and start turning up the fuel. Dont just bury the screw, start off incrementally, 1/4-3/8 of a turn at a time. Bump the timing up a hair, and if your not happy, add an intercooler and add more fuel and boost.
A gear swap to 4.56 or 4.88 would probobally make the biggest difference, though.
Akila 03-31-2006, 12:43 PM Diesel Pro, That's why your the Diesel Pro!
3500on40s 03-31-2006, 03:19 PM well the truck crusies awesomely. 75-80 mph cruising is the sweet spot for this truck. I'm only going up to 40s from 39.5s so I shouldn't need to regear. I'll do the gauges and exhaust first and then go from there.
3500on40s 03-31-2006, 03:27 PM oh btw here is a pic of my truck....

w_huisman 03-31-2006, 04:26 PM Did you buy that monster off Ebay? I swear that truck looks familiar.
Turbine Doc 03-31-2006, 04:38 PM Good looking ride, need to park it in your "garage" with more photos so we can get a better look at it. You can set up your garage with the User CP button on top most tool bar header
3500on40s 03-31-2006, 05:21 PM yea I did buy it off of eBay. I love the truck.
I gota get some more pics. Thats the only pic I got of it. Will have to take some more
gmctd 03-31-2006, 06:45 PM You really should look into using the center-carrier bearing spacer, as used in the Dodges - drops the bearing carrier down by three inches, reduces that severe driveshaft angle you see in the pic.
Shares the angle with the trans joint, saves the splines and crosses.
bow-tie-guy 03-31-2006, 09:17 PM Diesel Pro, That's why your the Diesel Pro!
Well said. Just for reference, when did they make the change from all mechanical?
DieselPro 03-31-2006, 09:49 PM 93 last year for mechanical trucks. Lots of cargo vans and such used mechanical way on up there.
gmctd 03-31-2006, 10:39 PM FYI - don't turn out that not-even-girly-man 4" exhaust in front of the rear tires, like most uninformed dufuses do.
That is a hi-pressure area, and you already got more exhaust back-pressure than you need.
A turn-out behind the rear wheel will be in that low-pressure area, and will help extract turbo-boosted by-product - namely, hot exhaust.
Precisely why F-D-GM located the tailpipe there, in the first place.............
3500on40s 03-31-2006, 11:57 PM the SS Diesel exhaust is routed out behind the rear wheel. I can't wait to get the rest of the money to buy it. Then comes my gauges.
quantum mechanic 04-01-2006, 12:19 AM Nice truck.
Yibbutkeen 04-01-2006, 02:24 AM 93 last year for mechanical trucks. Lots of cargo vans and such used mechanical way on up there.
NA hummers use the mech as well - last year was 96. 96 turbos are electronic I believe.
