I am looking at getting a new one. Want a 230/240v vertical tank with the most bang for the buck under a grand.......;)

I saw Northern has a Ingersoll-Rand (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_211720_211720)for $799.00 and looks like a nice compressor. The tank size doesn't bother me, 80 would be nice but 60 is fine. The CFM is more than some of the ones I saw at Home Depot. I wouldn't mind the 175psi max instead of 135.

You think 135psi max would be too small?? The most I would use is 120-125 to air up truck/trailer tires, and the 125psi I have now doesn't get the tires to 105.....that is why I was wondering if the 135 would cut it..

Anyway and good/bad on the IR's or something better for the money???

Edit: Also found a Craftsman Professional (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00916780000&tab=spe#tab) any good/bad about these? I have a Craftsman that is doing pretty good now, but I have just outgrown it, plus it was free....;)

Cant beat Ingersoll-Rand. We got ours at Home Cheapo and couldnt be happier with it. It runs paint guns, impacts, plasma cutter, air sander, everything all at once and never runs out of air. Very quiet and smooth too...

The main thing to look for is the SCFM. The higher this number the bigger the compressor is and the more you can do with it. If you look at air tools they will have a SCFM requried in the specs. The best way to purchase a compressor is figure out which tools you want to run, look at their specs then get a compressor that will at least meet the specs. If you get a big enough compressor now you won't have to worry about outgrowing it again. Just for reference, I think my compressor is around 27 SCFM and I can run air grinders & sanders all day long.

The biggest advantage to a max pressure of 175psi is that your compressor will probably never drop below 125psi which is ideal operating pressure for most impacts, chisels, wrenches.

I remember when I was young and we would have to wait for the air compressor to catch up just to use the impact on a rusted bolt.

I would go with the Husky. You could buy 2 Husky's for the price of one IR. Save your money and buy a Titanium IR impact.

That's a Napa 15hp, 3cyl 120 gallon tank (if I remember right) I sold that a few years ago..The deal was it was to be delivered, so it got to ride in my old truck :)

If I had your money Skipp ,Id buy a 5000 hp air induced tri-phase multi speed quad head air purified compressor. And mount about 45 or so gages and lights to it so it is a real TEXAS gem .):h

Uh...No, the IR is close to the same price as the Husky at the local Home Depot...

...and I already have a really good IR 1/2" Impact....

For a G can. I went to an industrial compressor repair place that sells some used reconditioned compressors. I got a 80gal tank (build date 1962) dual stage Quincy pump with oil pressure driven unloaders, new 5hp motor with a motor starter. This thing weighs over 1000lbs, is upright so it doesn't take up too much space and cut out pressure is set at 175. I was looking for a compressor that would run a hoist and tire changing equipment and I couldn't find anything in the same league at the big box stores. Works for me.

$40,000, 150HP compressor (pics)
this is our shops new compressor. as the title says is cost right at 40 grand and is rated at 125 HP but has a peak rating at 150 HP. its suposed to be this "SMART" compressor that works way more efficient then a standard air compressor. I was told we are getting a $15,000 energy savings discount from Edison (the power company) for purchasing this thing. dont know how true that is but whatever.

we currently have 2, 100 HP compressors from Atlas Copco but one is older so it was time to upgrade. I tried like hell to get them to put it in the back of my truck, but no luck.http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif if you wondering why we need such a monster its because of our Plasma spray process and coating process's we do here. she's a beauity I think. not really much to see but I thought I would take a few pics before she's pulled out of the shop and installed out side.

I have a 5 HP Emglo with a "W" pump (4 cyl). It has served me very well for the last 30 years and they still make it nearly unchanged.

If you can find an IR T-30 for that price you should buy them all...that is way over 1/2 IIRC...I have done alot of research on compressors in the last month or so...

There are other IR compressors out there that aren't all they appear to be, I have talked to a couple IR salesmen that said that IR has a compressor out there that are getting phased out because of repeated problems and warranty work. I believe it was the TS series, but I will double check to make sure.....The IR series pumps with said problem is one of the ones I was looking at and was steered away from for that very reason...

We have been running an IR 2-stage 175psi 5HP? 80gal compressor now for about 10 years on a daily basis. It runs off 3ph and has automatic drain and oil level monitoring. I blew up 3 "7hp Oil Less" Home Depot specials before I got the IR.

Avoid oil-less. Get 2-stage. Cast Iron is your friend. HP ratings are a joke, go by amps or CFM at 90PSI.
