: Engine noise question...

I was at the NASCAR race this last weekend in Texas. There are getting to be a LOT of Dmaxes out there, which is really encouraging.

I was noticing (and I have noticed this before), that some of them are really, really quiet, and others (like mine), are quite a bit louder when they're idling (typical engine knock and noise).

It's nothing that I'm concerned about, but I'm just curious if anyone knows or has any thoughts on why they would be so much different between trucks.

PS: Since I have an 02, I was basically only comparing mine to 01's and 02's.

Mine got quiet when I added primrose 405 additive.

That makes me think that it should/would have something to do with fuel quality/cetane.

This is the thing. I bought fuel from 3 different places than I normally do (when local I ALWAYS buy from the same truck stop), and the sound of my engine didn't change one bit. I even forgot to put FuelPower in one tank, and it sounded the same without it, and fuel from a different source, so I don't think that it's all fuel/cetane based...

From what I have read some performance chips increase engine noise at idle. I expect that is the reason.

You assume cetane and I assume lubricicity.

i have noticed that my 03 is very noisy it is almost as bad as my brothers 6.0. i just figured it was because of the 104000 on the od.

I am NOT running a lubricity agent. Maybe I should try that and see what that does for the noise.

Also, I personally do not have a performance box of any kind on my truck, in fact it's totally stock as far as the powertrain goes, and my truck is one of the noiser ones...
