Has anyone had any problems with Diamond Shamrock Diesel. I know I wouldnt buy their gas, but isnt diesel a bit more forgiving? What are your opinions

I've never tried DS fuel...but just follow this simple rule and you will be ok...

Always fill up at a station that turns a lot of diesel, such as a truck stop or service station that has a lot of diesel business. This way the diesel in the station tank is fresh.

The last place you want to fill up is a station that rarely sells diesel. Their tanks may store diesel for a long time and could accumulate a lot of moisture, trash and even start growing algea.

I hope this helps.

This station I tried (now Valero), has a seperate diesel area, with the raised rood and high flow pumps, so I presume that they move alot of diesel. My question is more along the lines of is all diesel created equal? I know gas is not, but am unsure about Diesel?

I have been running it for several months now. Haven't noticed anything different about, other than it is 0.20-0.30 cents per gallon cheaper than the the places around the station. I usually fill up at the DS or the Wal-mart, they usually have the same prices, I seem to get better fuel ecomony with the DS fuel I think wal-mart has been trucking some winter blend or something down here, my truck doesn't do as well on it.

Here in Phoenix, all gas IS created equal. Every drop of fuel enters the state through pipelines owned by Kinder Morgan. They all dump into the same tank farms, they only difference is in the additive package once it arrives here.

Want proof? We had one of the two pipelines break, all gas stations/brands had the same issues with availability. We got a crash course in fuel delivery that month.

IIRC it is essentialy the same everywhere. Different chains buy different grades of the same gas. The difference in grades is the level of the tank it comes from. Top grade (more expensive) comes from the top. The cheaper the gas you get (or lower grade) the lower in the tank you buy from. Diamond Shamrock (valero) usualy buys from the bottom. This is where all the sediment settles, resulting in bad gasoline. This is their gas policy. I am not sure about their Diesel or if diesel is bought this way. thats why I am asking the good folks here.

Cheers

I heard that they are buying oil that is coming out of the ground a little "hot" not sure what that means but it has stuff in it that requires more refinement. They are able to buy it cheaper and distribute it at a cheaper rate, that is how it was explaned to me several months ago.

Where are you located?

I live in Ft. Worth and i ran walmart diesel for about 3 months and noticed about a 2 mpg drop in fuel economy. When i started using conoco or fuel from albertson's stations again the fuel economy went up back up.

I am in Houston. If you go to http://www.houstongasprices.com/ you can find the cheapest prices. I used the Valero at Beltway 8 at Little York, this last time, and saved about $.15 a gal.

Have used Diamond Shamrock Diesel from stations "kitty corner" from each other in Loveland, CO. Intersection of 287 & 402. No problems and good price. Have been using B20 of late and go to Ft. Collins to fill up.

Am I wrong. This is just what I have been told by people in the industry

I have worked in the energy industry since 1968, including 5 years in an oil refinery. Never in my life have I seen a tank anywhere that had multiple taps up the side to take product out at different levels. In all terminal operations I am familiar with, product comes in, usually by pipeline, and all fuel must meet the pipeline's standards.

I will agree that different marketers may have different specifications, but I have never known any marketer that intentionally distributed dirty fuel to its stations. There is no quicker way of losing business than selling contaminated products that adversely affect customer vehicles or equipment.
