: Looking for a pic (glowing exhaust)
Dmax05 03-27-2006, 04:21 PM I wasnt sure where to put this, and its exhuast related so...
I am looking for the pic of I believe a cummins on a engine dyno with the exhaust manifold glowing red along with the turbo and 5" exhaust also glowing red hot.
I think someone has it as an avatar, I would like a large version tho.
Thanks
Matt
Yibbutkeen 03-27-2006, 04:38 PM Here are some of a 12 cyl cat diesel generator 440v 3 phase 800 amp at full load on its break-in test:

Dmax05 03-27-2006, 04:55 PM Thanks Yibbutkeen, but its not quite what I am looking for, the pic I am talking about is taken of the passanger side, looked like a cummins but I didnt take the time to look hard. It shows the exhaust manifold, the turbo and the 5" exhaust glowing red.
Did you take those pics? If so I bet that CAT held up fine didnt it!? I wish the GMC 2500HD would come with the CAT option!! maby some day
Well thanks again!
Matt
OCDUNE 03-27-2006, 05:10 PM Try this one

frogger1946 03-27-2006, 05:14 PM That one got a little warm.
nosliw 03-27-2006, 05:22 PM doesnt look like a cummins to me. ^^
this is the only inline engine besides huge cats and detroits that i have with a glowing turbo

Dmax05 03-27-2006, 05:26 PM Yep thats the one! Thanks OCDUNE and nosliw!
What would you the guess EGT's are?

Well the turbos on the cat I linked to were 1150 degrees. that other one is much hotter. I would guess 1300-1400, probably verging on turbo failure.
Dmax05 03-27-2006, 10:27 PM could you imagine walking up there with a hammer! the destruction!
Kappa9012 03-27-2006, 11:24 PM there's no way that's 1300-1400 maybe Celsius. That is probably easily in the 1000 Degrees C range. Iron starts to melt around 1800 degrees F.
hell you couldn't pay me to throw a hammer at that thing. Turbos have a "Burst Containment" criteria. All manufacturers mandate that their turbos contain them selves within the housing if the wheel should come apart. That housing isn't gonna hold sh!t.
Dmax05 03-27-2006, 11:47 PM Iron(s) starts to melt around 2786*F
Aluminum starts to melt around 1236*F
<<These are rough figures, and remember there are different types of metals, and melting points may vary ALOT!>> ;)

Sorry I forget there's quite a few metric using deviants around here ;)
The pics on the cat were 1100-1150 F (600ish C), not C. I was guessing 1300-1400 F (750-800C)
The cat guy said the spec for the generator expected failure at around 1300 by the turbos.
Also that 1100 was the SURFACE temp of the outside of the turbo, as measured by some very fancy, expensive laser tool.
Kappa9012 03-28-2006, 12:24 PM My mistake on the melting point, im retarded I was thinking of when we were casting brass. those are close):h
i'm confused about the generator stuff. I thought that pic was from a hand made exhaust manifold for a race engine.

I posted a link to a generator with glowing exhausts. It wasn't quite what the OP wanted, but it was what I had handy. Someone else produced the desired pics.
Dmax05 03-28-2006, 01:19 PM well its hard to tell what melting points are due to all types of metals ect.
Yibbutkeen: The "winning pic" is in the link you provided just scroll down some, and nosliw came in a close second. I thank you both for the pictures.
All those turbos in those pics were close to failure tho thats for sure! lol
