Posted this on another thread that may have been the wrong area.Sorry about the repetition.

I had a "KNOWALLABOUTTRANNY' kind of neighbor come by when i was cleaning my truck and started talking to me about watching me doing my own service.A lot of what we discussed was consistent with what i have read here regarding DIY service, and he was impressed.

One thing he mentioned that i have not seen is in reference to the transfer case.I told him that was the last job for me to do and he advised AGAINST it and suggested i take it to the dealer to get it done because of the MAGNESIUM content of the TC--and that if i nicked or damaged it the road salt would really do damage in a short time.He says the dealer has the right tools and the spray to re-do the TC after service.I did crawl under to check out the TC-looking for the drain and fill plugs and did see the WARNING on it.

Any comments about this topic??

I have never heard of a spray for the transfer case. They are magnesium and the drain plugs are aluminum. The only thing you need to do is apply some pipe thread sealant to the drain and fill plugs. I don't see how a nick or a scratch will do any harm. The Tcase is under the vehicle with one little skid plate under it, most of it is still exposed to road debris and probably gets hit with rocks daily.

GMCSID--your comment makes so much sense about the road debris. Thanks .I think i will just go ahead and do it -Drain -fiill - PIPE Sealant.

I got Transyn in the tranny. Is that what i replace it with?and if so ,do you know how much fluid is in the transfer case?Pipe sealant?? Do you mean something like Teflon Tape or is it something different?

TranSynd is a little expensive but any Dexron III fluid is ok in the Tcase. 2 quarts should fill it. Teflon tape or liquid is ok for the plugs. And don't overtighten. Only 15 lb ft on the plugs.

Thanks again. One more thing.I don't own a Torque wrench but will consider getting one if the torque specs are that important.I usually hand tighten and then give an extra pull!!!How critical are the specs ?

Burnt......... the only thing that will hurt that case heavy abuse and a No, 2 pencil. The no.2 can (takes a long time and a few pencils) cut a hole in it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
