Ok this is my first diesel and I have two main questions on this topic:

First, why do we want to put in an additive?

Second what is out there and what do you recommend and why?

My foreman in charge of my crews puts Power Service Diesel Kleen +Cetane Boost in the trucks and said that is what I should do too. He worked 8yrs fishing the Baring straight out of Alaska and said that is what all the boats run.

You asked three questions. Here are my answers.

1. Because everybody else is doing it. LOL

2. Shell Rotella diesel fuel additive.

3. Most noticable difference out of all the additives I have used.

GM says not to use any additives unless there GM approved on the LB7 anyway because they destroy injecters. I witnessed this first hand on my old truck. It was -40c and i had just pulled it out of a three month storage with summer diesel in it. Naturaly I was worried about the fuel gelling, so I dumped in some additive/anti-gell. To my dismay the check engine light came on after A few miles. Took it to the Dealer and they found an injector was at + 8 istead of 4 or whatever it was supose to be. They replaced it and told me it was the additive. I ran a tank of clean diesel and the light came back on.took it back to the dealer, found three more injectors out of wack said theyed replace them but i had to wait for parts. apperently if one injector f***'s up the others compensate that's why they didnt get it the first time. I bought the GM recomened additive ran a tank with it then another with clean diesel. Never got the 3 other injectors replaced because the basterds found out i had a chip and bye bye warranty. The injectors cleaned themselfs out and the light went away. The moral of the story is non GM recomended additives will gum up your injectors [ i wasnt the only one at the dealer with that problem. another guy went through 12 injecters before they figured it out] So i just plain stay the hell away from additives.

I on the other hand wouldn't run a tank without additive ...

Reasons are added lubricant, water emulsifiers , cetane booster and detergent for injector cleaning... Not in any specific order ...

What I'd like to know if possible the difference between Primrose and FPPF ...

Once I find out I'll tell you why ....

Aron so did you find a GM approved additive that you ran?

The only thing that makes me run an additive in every tank is the added lubricity. There are many other advantages to a good additive, but I think it will be the lubricity and good filtration that saves my injectors. And let's not even begin the debate again between emulsifiers and demulsifiers. That one will never be resolved. Edited by: Amric

Aron...

In my eyes, its definitely possible that the additive unclogged the fuel but maybe a few clogged particles from the darn fuel line clogged it up??

When my car was shifting straight to 2nd (skipped 1st), they told me that my tranny was bad and I had to have it replace..

I gave them the middle finger and left. Sure enough I later found out that I had done some heavy duty hauling on first gear... This made the car think that first gear was sticking and it bypassed it..

3 weeks later, it automatically "reset".. it started using 1st again.

Its been 10 months now and not a problem since!

Dont always believe these guys man.. they'll lie straight on your face to make a buck.

I would say you were more than lucky to even get it started at -40F with #2. It should have been jelled from bow to stern. It fact it was a miracle you got it started. Later! Frank

GM only has 2 approved for now, one is Stanadyne and the other is Racor. Both are Demulsifiers.

Frank Blum, It was at my school in a heated shop wile i was installing a 4" lift. The weather was warm when I brought it in and had turned cold by the time i was done.

Diesel_4_me The first additive I used was an anti-gell not GM approved it caused the problems. the second one I used I bought at the dealer It was GM approved it seemed to clear up the problem. As for particals in the fuel, not likely all the diesel I ran through that truck came from my 1000 gallion farm tank and its brand new [no rust] with double filters and the truck only had 44000 kilometers at the time.Id also like to add that I will NEVER go to Serwood Chevolds again. I almost punched out the shop mannager after he voided my warranty. So anyone in Saskatoon stay away there a bunch of crooks.

Is the Stanadyne additive called One Shot? Or does anyone use One Shot?

"one shot" is the packaging - an eight ounce bottle that will do one tank of fuel. Stanadyne performance formula and Stanadyne lubricity formula are the product names. It is less expensive to buy the pints or half gallons instead of the one-shot bottles - but they sure are handy...

I buy my performance formula from oregonfuelinjection.com, but usdieselparts.com has good prices as well...

Diesel Dragon,

Just curious ... Where did you purchase your 5 Gal pail? I got a deal on one about 3 years ago from a local dealer that was switching brands. It's just about gone and I was planning to buy another one from FuelAdditivesOnline.com (http://www.fueladditivesonline.com). They have the best price I have found (so far) on the 5 gal pails.

I got mine from a local injection pump repair shop. He wasnt the cheapest around but he was close so I picked it up in person. More convience then price.

But if you go to Stanadyne's web site they have a dealer location page. Maybe there's some one else close to you. You can also call them up and ask them, if there's any new dealers not listed on their site near you.

Why would you be so angry at the shop manager for voiding your warranty? That's the downside of installing a chip. You know the rules of the game...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Diesel Dragon,
