: Truck lost prime this morning...
GMC2500HD 03-23-2006, 11:02 PM Got in truck this morning, drove about 40 miles on the way to work, stopped at drive thru to get breakfast, lady could not hear me so I turned off my truck to order. Then I turned the key back on, went to start and nothing.... zip... Would not start. Moved it out of the way, pi$$ed off, and then realized truck was not getting fuel. Went to prime truck and the primer was soft. Took about 20 hits to get it stout again. Truck started right up after that... Weird... First time this has ever happened. Just changed fuel filter not to long ago, thinking it might have been air left over. Any other ideas?
Did not have any more issues the rest of the day, so not sure, might have been a fluke deal...
duramaxdiesel 03-23-2006, 11:05 PM Could the bleeder screw be loose and cause this?
GMC2500HD 03-23-2006, 11:19 PM It could, but I checked it and it was tight. Was not hishing or anything when I got the truck to restart so not sure. But I thought about that too..
FourBeer 03-24-2006, 10:27 AM This happened to a friend of mine. His problem was bad fuel. There was a black sludge in his fuel tank and it clogged the screen filter that is in the tank. He had to have the tank cleaned out.
If this is your problem, the dealership will try to talk you into a new tank. Don't let them. Taking the tank to someone who can clean it.....much cheaper (only cost about $60).
fast03 03-24-2006, 10:31 AM check the bulletins for the early trucks. I have been told alot of them had filter housings that would crack. I beleive there is an unofficial policy to replace bad ones. good luck
richard cheese 03-24-2006, 02:35 PM mine did that. it was when I figured out the fuel guage was a LIAR. it said i had a little less than half a tank left, with 93 miles left on the range, then nothing..
thank god it was in my driveway when it happened
Frank Blum 03-24-2006, 10:49 PM Could have been something as simple as a check valve in the head stuck open. Later! Frank
dmaxtechreno1 03-24-2006, 11:26 PM if the screw was loose or damaged to overtightening it is very doubtfull it would cause it to lose prime that fast. very possible bad fuel, sticking fuel pressure regulator usaully acompanied by surging idle, also possibly injector issue.
GMC2500HD 05-04-2006, 02:00 PM Well it did it again today. Went to get a haircut and was out of it for about 20 mins. Got back in went to start it and it started and then died. Tried again with the same result. Did this a few times then opened the hood, got out and primer was soft again.. Pumped it up, truck started and no problems now.. Starting to get weird.. Might be time to take it back in.:o: ..or buy a new one...:D .
Mitchagain 05-04-2006, 02:26 PM Do you have a secondary filter?
Jim659 05-04-2006, 02:33 PM This is only the second time this has happened in two months? Strange, I would take the filter off and reinstall it.

Going to do that this evening when I get home. See if something is cracked or the seal is bad or missing.. Not real sure, but once it is primed it starts right back up no issues...
Dmaxdiesel101 05-06-2006, 09:56 AM My 03 did that last year. I would let it sit for 10 mins and start it and nothing primed it a couple of times and it would start. Took it in and they sais it was the filter housing, but it did not fix the problem, so they replaced all of my fuel lines and sending unit from the tank, but it too did not fix the problem turns out the FICM on the valve cover developed a internal leak causing a loss of prime, after 1 week of rediagnosis i havent had a problem since hope this helps
Diesel-N-Dust 05-06-2006, 10:10 AM That is exactly how my truck acted when the injectors went bad.Dealer replaced all 8.
