Greetings and Salutations...
I recently acquired an '84 Chevy Silverado with a 6.2L Diesel 4x4. It has a 3 speed with OD tranny in it, I am not sure which one, I haven't crawled under the beast to take a look.
It is the stock tranny, but has been rebuilt once already.

Right now it is not shifting into 3rd regularly, and no overdrive. Fluid smells burnt and is definitely not the right color.
Is there an easy fix, or is it toast?

If Toast, I did talk to a guy, and he recommends the 700R4HD.

Are there other suggestions?

I would like something that is a "bolt in" replacement, but something that requires new drive shafts would also work.

Looking for recommendations on an Automatic or Manual tranny that would work best, tow a boat, commute, whatever, and last a while. Also, something that might increase fuel economy.

Suggestions, comments, recommendations?

Thanks!

I suggest you check out an AC DELCO exchange rebuilt trans & torque converter. They can supply the "correct" exchange rebuilt. Last I knew the older units had a 3yr 50K national warranty. This is not a 36 mo./ 100k Goodwrench trans. GM dealer can give you a price, then check out AC Delco with a shop that is an AC Delco reseller & is an installer of the trans. Beware of local rebuilders,as the quality can be great or in the toilet.Good luck
