Just took delivery of my new D/A on Thursday. Got it home and was taking a look under the truck (well actually taking some photos) and took a photo of the oil filter. I know that the manual states the OEM AC/Delco filter is the PF2232. Unfortunately, I don't have one of these on hand to compare, but the one on my new truck sure seems to have a smaller overall diameter than the PF2232.

I may be delusional, but is the PF2232 still the one for our new trucks? The photo shows the product number on the filter on my truck.

Both my owner's manual (Duramax supplemental manual) and the computer at AutoZone specify the PF2232.

Congrats Steve on your new ride!!... I think that the filter you show in the photo is the Isuzu filter... The AC/Delco filter has a different #...........Triffid

My truck was built the last week of February and it came with the ACDelco PF2232. Suprising that it isn't even the ACDelco filter. Maybe GM relized that their own filters were overpriced and started buying them from another source.

sfischer,

Congrats! I just pulled that same filter off mine last night. Replaced it with a WIX and Mobil Delvac 1300. I wrote the number down just incase I needed it someday. Edited by: Voodoo

Voodoo,

What was the Wix replacement filter number?

If it was the 57202, then that looks like a cross for the AC PF2232. I guess the one that I have on the truck is just an Isuzu filter as Triffid indicated.

Thanks for the info. guys.

You are right, it was a 57202 I used.

Not necessarily "same cost", some are priced better than others.

I'm just getting ready for my first oil change - is the Fumoto valve the lifesaver that everyone (or a lot) seems to indicate? Seems every 10,000 miles or so wouldn't be a major inconvenience, but then again I've never dealt with 10 quarts at a time either...

I'm concerned because the truck will see a lot of off-road miles in the US & Mex - 6 hours of washboard dirt roads will vibrate anything loose that can come loose.

Perhaps a topic for another thread.

Can't answer your question concerning the Fumoto valve. I was considering the same thing. I do know that there is more room (and height, even with my 2WD) than there was on my 1994 2500. The jury is still out.

If you have the factory skid plate the oil will drain right onto it after the flow has slowed down some. The fumoto valve makes the job much cleaner for you, your truck and the floor. If you don't do it yourself, whoever does it will make the mess on your skid plate, and you may even bring it home still dripping. After one oil change I knew that the fumoto was the way to go. --SS

Just changed my oil last night ('04 LLY)--first time at 850 miles--it was dirty looking. The AC 2232 is the same diameter as the black one, my wrench fit both nicely. Also used Mobil 1300. PS, for anyone in MI Murry's auto parts has the AC2232 for $3.59!! Don't have skid plate so fumoto was not needed.

I changed my oil on Saturday and put on a Fram 9100. Yes, the original filter was a PITA to get off.... I ended up getting it with the filter pliers that Auto Zone sells..

Do a search in the forum on Fram filters. I think that you'll be displeased with what you find.

Rick, I'm not sure but Fram does have different "levels" of crappy filters. You may have gotten lucky and recieved a rebadged filter from a good company...but not Fram. Do a search on fram...you'll be sick afterwards. The "Fram" thing all started years ago with a buy-out and a big deal with Wally World. When the buyer tells the supplyer how much the filters should or should I say "will" cost.....there is a problem.

Thanks for the heads up!

IIRC the black oe filters are mfg by Champion. The STP 9100 sold by Auto Zone is externally almost identical(I stood them on end and the oe from my new truck was about 1/16" longer)I wish someone could tell us if they were the same filter.Has anyone purchased a black non delco filter from their dealer?

I went to Auto Zone & the computer pulled up the specific STP filter for my '04 Duramax (forgot the number, probably the 9100), but while they do carry AC Delco products, they don't have the PF2232. HOWEVER I found another AC Delco filter in the store (forgot the number) that was identical in size externally to the STP for this truck - looks to be the same as the 2232.

Reason I'm curious - the cheapest price I could find the 2232 for was $15. This other AC Delco filter that looked identical was under $4. Is the 2232 somehow optimized for diesel filtration, thus meriting the extra cost?

04-06-2004, 08:20 AM
I believe the 2232 is built with thicker sheetmetal, all my gasser AC filters you could dent with just hand pressure, not the 2232 or the original black one! In fact my dealer's last words as I was driving it off the lot were make sure you use the right filters--they have had trucks come in with non OEM filters than were "imploded".

By the way, if you don't have a Murrys near by Autozone has the 2232 for $7.99. $15 is way too much for this filter.

You're kidding! I'll have to check their website or something. There's a big AutoZone just down the street from me & while they carry AC Delco stuff, I had them look up the 2232, and they said they couldn't even order it!

$15 is the cheapest I could find the filter. Two other places I checked wanted $19 and $23 for it.

If anyone is interested, I just bought some Amsoil filters for $8+ each. They are #SDF52. These filters are extremely good filters mfg by Hastings.

See, most filters filter in the 20-30micron range where most of your wear occurs. These filters filter down to 10 micron. I guess I wouldnt quibble on price difference for a filter knowing that I have a superior filter that has actually been tested and compared to other filters.

pennywise now/dollar foolish when your rebuilding your motor because of advanced wear caused by poor filtering.....

Yah, and was my first filter change a b*tch to get off. They must use an air impact to assemble at factory. Guess they didnt want it to fall off.......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I believe the amsoil filter is made by baldwin. i used to buy the sdf52's and later bought some baldwin's. other than the color the stamping looks identical.

inte and redneck45,

Autozone sells STP filters and the 9100 fits. It is made by champion and is a quality filter. Last week they had them on sale for 1.99 for the first and .99 for the second. Yeah, I bought all 9 they had. They are normally 4.99 at our store. Not $15. Good luck.

Baldwin has made the Amsoil filter for a number of yars now. Baldwin owns hastings.

If I get a chance I will check the local Auto Zone for the 1.99 special and cut it open. I am itching to use my new filter cutter againhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I saw that filter there also ... here's the odd thing that steered me to the 2232:

I knew the truck wanted AC Delco (per the manual), but I couldn't remember the number (2232) - so I looked around at the other AC Delco filters & found one that was the exact size as the 2232 and the STP 9100 - just a different number (1000-series number).

Because there are two filters put out by AC Delco that use the exact same body, but one costs 3x more leads me to believe there's something significantly different inside - that or some marketing guy just figured a way to ding diesel owners ... either way, I wanted to be sure before I put one on the truck.

The dmax filter is specifically designed to handle the high oil pressures the engine produces. Thats why the 2232 isnt shard with any other application.. Its specifically made for this engine

They must have access to different stuff out there - that or the employees out here in CA just ain't that bright... When I asked for the "2232" the people at the AutoZone here told me the AC Delco numbers don't go that high http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I went into a local AutoZone last week and they had two AC PF2232's on the shelf, but no label for price. I took them up to the register to check a price and it wouldn't even come up in their computer. I figured maybe they had special ordered a few for someone.

Went back today and the two were still there, but now were sitting on the rack above a regular store label priced at $7.99. I bought both and wish they had more. Hopefully, they will carry them on a regular basis.

I don't think you could have said it better.

I put a Baldwin 1441 on for about $6. If a person can't afford a $6 filter or even if it was a $15 dollar filter for that matter, this truck is probably too expensive for him/her to own .

The last time I checked the Badwin B1441 had the best specs.

Baldwin B1441: 8 micron nominal (50%, Beta =2) and 23 micron absolute (98.7%, Beta = 75)

See the Oil filter for duramax question (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2614&KW=b1441+beta) topic for more info.
