Hi Friends,

Regrettably, my new 2006+ Duramax LBZ has to sit outside in our driveway. I live in a very low crime area, but I am still concerned about fuel vandalism and other problems. Being able to secure the fuel door or fuel cap would give me a bit of added peace.

I checked with my local Chevy dealership and GM doesn't market a locking fuel cap for the 2006 model (it is different, naturally, than the previous years). GM carries a Billet fuel door, but not a locking one.

Soooo, my question is this: Who makes the finest locking Billet fuel door? I do not mind spending a hundred or two, but I want one that is best-of-breed and one that I can easily put on myself without drilling holes in the body.

Any suggestions?

I did a search and, while there are a few threads on this problem, they are fairly old and never came to any final solution. Perhaps something new has developed since then.

Thanks very much,

Steve

I just installed one a few weeks ago, you can see pics here:

The one I bought seems pretty stout, the lock mechanism is smooth and holds without problems. I think the brand is AMI. PM me if you have any questions.

I own one of these:

There are better ones out there. But this fit my price range $$ (PN 6090L).

AMI is the best locking fuel door on the market, I think. I know the owner of the company very well and I love his quality of work as well. Plus it helps that his company is 10 min. away from me. Here is there website www.allsalesmfg.com (http://www.allsalesmfg.com) .

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your help.

I went to the AMI/AllSalesMfg web site and bumped around; very impressive. Then, I pulled up the StylinConcepts web site and plowed through all of the finish options of the AllSales/AMI Billet locking fuel doors.

I ended up buying the 6090KL. This is the AMI locking Billet fuel door in black finish. The black should match my black door handles and black door surrounds. I can always have the fuel door painted Graystone Metallic later if I want if, for some reason I don't like it. I have a friend who owns a local (very small, very good) auto body shop and he could do the small painting job easily.

Actually, I'm sure the black finish will look GREAT.

Finances: The 6090KL Locking Billet Fuel Door was $109.95, the shipping cost $15.50 (seems excessive) and insurance was $1.50....for a grand total of $126.95.

StylinConcepts lists a retail of $164.93, so $127.00 delivered should be a pretty good deal.

I just wanted to let you guys know that, after your suggestions, I bought the AMI Locking Billet Fuel Door. Thank you very much for the help and advice, I really appreciate it.

Aziator, I visited the DieselPlace link on your truck; what a great looking truck and snazzy paint job, my friend. I'm a retired watchmaker/goldsmith and can usually muddle my way through mechanical things. BUT it is surely possible that I may need your guidance in the Billet fuel door installation and will surely take you up on your offer to cyber-assist, if I have questions. Thank you.

If you guys want, I can take photos of the various steps in the installation. It would be no problem and might help others at DieselPlace.

A big THANK YOU to all,

Steve

Dino One,

The Pro-Fit REALLY looks great. If I didn't have the AMI Billet Fuel Door somewhere in FedEx and flying its way to me, I'd prolly spring for it. Thanks for showing ut to us.

Ya, that is very nice.

I ordered an AMI the evening of the 22nd and when I got home from work it was here!
Turns out they're in Corona not 2 miles from my office... I could have picked it up during lunch!

Got it installed... make sure you have a torx bit to remove the stocker.

I have a 2006 and bought the AC Delco locking fuel cap - part #15070014. It cost $8.64 plus $6 shipping - total of $14.64. Looks like the original cap except it has a key hole in the middle. When locked, you can tighten the cap, but it free spins when you try to loosen it.

Well guys, the package came from Stylin Concepts yesterday and I fitted my locking fuel door. The install took me about forty-five minutes and I could fit another in about twenty. Please bear in mind that I am a retired watchmaker/goldsmith and it is just my nature to do perfect handwork.

My hearfelt thanks to all who participated and helped me to find the perfect locking fuel door. AMI (All Sports Manufacturing Inc) is a fabulous product in every way.

Below are two photos: a wide and close view of my new AMI Billet Locking Fuel Door.

So, to all those others of us with these doors, here is my concern:

You now know that anybody with an allen wrench and 20 seconds can take this "locking" door off, have access to whatever we were protecting, and walk away with a $100.00 piece of metal to boot.

Any ideas how to make the "easy to install" locking door not so easy to remove ?

BTW: Dogzapper - nice looking truck !

Friend John,

I plan on owning my Duramax for a long, long time. I used red LockTite on the threads of the four big Allen screws. Yeah, that'll work.

I owned a jewelry store for a long time and learned that any security measure was just a matter of stalling, making it hard and taking lots of the bad guy's time. And, by making it easier for him to go somewhere else, you'd be left alone. Red LockTite is really tough stuff and it would be very difficult to get the screws out.

My only reason for the locking fuel door is I have a weird neighbor, basically a loner sociopath who has made enemies of everyone on our road. I didn't sell him my last truck, a 2003 Z-71 EC/SB and he is so pissed at me that I was concerned that he would put sugar or sand in my fuel in the middle of the night (he is like that). The secured screws and lock will very much slow his problems with me. And if he is found on our property at night by me, it could be very bad for him (think about Hank Williams Jr's "Country Boy Will Survive").

I had to buy longer ss allenhead screws since I have a dually with the plastic bedsides (thicker). Instead of just buying regular allenheads, I got the type that are called "tamperproof". They come with their own tool to remove. Can't tell a difference unless you get close enough to open the fuel door. Again, not fool proof, but will slow them down.

Swap out the allens for security Torx.... not many theives have Torx tools, and only the pros are going to have a Torx bit with a hole in the middle.

Besides... it's a matter of making it difficult, not impossible.

If we made it impossible to get the door open, they'll just go underneath and punch a hole in the (plastic) tank... take what they can carry and let the rest drain.

Paul just gave me this info on a locking cap from AC Delco.

Hi Dom:

All of the items listed in My garage have links, so if you look in my "Other Upgrades" section and click on the "ACDelco Locking Fuel Cap (GT250)" link, it will take you right there. Same with all the other links. Let me know if you have any difficulties. Here is the direct link to My Garage:
