It seems that there are alot of people putting down on the 49RE. Alli has had it's problems. The fluid draining out of the torque converter. This is not that big of a deal but the computer sets a code that will not let the tranny go into reverse and it stays stuck in 3rd gear. GM even has a service bulletin out for this problem. That means that more than a few have had the same problem. If you have a stock 4x4 Alli, hook it to a tree and put it in 4wd hi and try to spin the tires. It won't do it. The motor just revs up but no pull or tire spin. The Dmax / Alli is not a bad combo, but it is not perfect or bullet proof. The 48 RE is not bullet proof either, no tranny is. GM should give a 70,000 mile warranty on the Alli if it is so good. The Alli problems that I know of happen after 36,000 miles, which means $$$$$$$$$

Why would they step down to a 70K? They already have a 100K on it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

GM--3/36 on the tranny. GM 100,000 on the engine only. Dodge 7/70 on Drivetrain and 100,000 on engine. sgilly --what the hell is that avatar a picture of? I look at it each time you post and I can't figure it out.

MABurns, I think it is a turtle skull.

As far as the warranty goes, your right. GM only has 3/36 on the tranny and truck. My Alli started acting up and I took it to the dealer, when I found out how much it cost just to pull it I took it dtraight to the Dodge dealer and traded it in. There are people who don't get good service out of their diesel's but that is mostly from poor maintenance. I work on diesel's for a living and they are pickey. I have 9 Cats that I take care of and an oil filter never gets changed without a fuel filter change. In over 22,000 hrs I have not had a single injector failure. These kitties run the same style fuel system that Cummins uses. Clean fuel and oil is key to long life. My original point was that the Alli is not all that great. With the CTD making 600ftlbs torque @ 1600 it don't need the extra gears that GM and Ford have. Space the ratio's out on the Alli and see what happens. It is not just the Alli, it is the whole truck built around the Alli. It just is not as much truck as the Dodge. A tranny is a mechanical device built by machine's and humans, it can fail at any time without warning. If the 48RE fails before 7/70 then I don't have to pay. My best friend had his Alli go out. The same problem that first wrote about, the fluid draining out of the torque converter. He bought an extended warranty and glad that he did or it would have cost him $2,200 to have it fixed. I make real good money but I don't want to pay and truck note and a repair bill. I get a new truck every year and half and have had them all. I will take my Dodge. I have had less problems from Dodge.

Hmmmm...I could of sworn my dealer said on the powertrain. Ehh...no big deal either way, I'm only going to keep it for a year at most.

I have in writting, 100,000 tranny warranty on my 03 GM. I don't have alot of faith in it anyway, it's backed by GM , that means they'll probably deny it no matter what. I guess they could start with the chip....

I would not sweat the Allison... if you don't beat it to death. I think it will do well over 100,000 and probaby 200,000 without any major problems.
