Were do you guys get your supplies???

Jperry 03-21-2006, 11:19 AM I got a local place called Pyramid that I usually get my bolts from. There is also a couple other places I know of but don't know if they sell to the public. I don't know if Pyramid has offices any where else but I can check the next time I am in there. Generally their hardware is really cheap. I think last time I stocked up on 5/16 hardware I got nuts washers and several different sizes of bolts for less than $20.00 I think it was around 100 pieces of nuts and washers and around 4 different sizes of bolts I think 50 each.
habanero 03-21-2006, 11:28 AM If you aren't in a big hurry for anything specific, keep an eye on Ebay and local farm auctions.
If you happen to have a military base near by, another possible source is http://www.govliquidation.com/ . I bought two pallets of plumbing fittings and hardware off that a year ago for about 90 bucks. A good bit of it wasn't real useful, but I now have enough 3/8" X 1.5" and 5/16" X 2.5" bolts to last the rest of my natural life (along with washers and lock nuts). Various other nuts and bolts in smaller quantities as well. Sold some of the more valuable hoses from the plumbing fitting pallet on ebay and ended up getting nearly all of my 90 bucks back.

I laughed when I read "allen bolt" I worked for an industrial supplier years ago, we had a croctchety guy that worked the counter ( he was about as friendly as a stick in the eye, you could see customers cringe when he was the one that waited on them )
If you asked for an allen bolt he would tell you we didnt sell them, technically we didnt. The proper term is "socket head cap screw"
Allen is a brand name and the original patent holder for this type of drive and a "bolt" is made to a much more lenient standard than a screw. Nobody makes this type of fastener in a "bolt"
If you dont have anyone local, I think Graingers used to carry fasteners ans U-Z industries is nationwide. I would avoid e-bay because of quality issues, there really is a lot of junk out there. IMHO you need to seek someone reputable.

TurboBeagleBuggy 03-21-2006, 12:43 PM I most of the normal stuff from my local supplier and then the odd ball and stainless fasteners and stuff I get from Fastenal.

jac6695 03-26-2006, 09:00 PM Another recomendation for Fastenal, or Grainger. You might want to try and set up a commercial account (even if you use just a credit card). Usually the price will be better.

TedReminder 03-27-2006, 12:03 PM Another vote for Mcmaster Carr, but then, I live a few hundred yards from their warehouse. I can call to order and pick up at will call in about an hour.
Very handy, and they have just about anything you will ever need. Pretty good quality too.

Brayden 03-28-2006, 03:52 PM Pretty pricey too :(
But when you need it, they've usually got it.
McRat 03-28-2006, 04:02 PM Yep, McMaster Carr has about the largest inventory and very fast turn around. Yes, you can get it cheaper if you shop around, but their service is second to none.
duramax 2001 03-28-2006, 04:11 PM I ended up buying a bolt assortment for my shop from
www.kpfasteners.com (http://www.kpfasteners.com/).
The prices seem to be inline. I also bought a few other items. Heat shrink, socket head capscrews and some electrical assortments along with a smaller metric bolt assortment.
I hate chasing bolts for every project! now I won't have too!:grd:
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP !
RichLockyer 03-28-2006, 04:12 PM Another vote for McMaster.
I've never thought their prices to be high.... much cheaper than normal consumer retail alternatives.
The guys at the dive shops and on the boats razz me about buying more "scuba gear" from McMaster than I do from the dive shop.
Seriously though... $1-$4 for a single O-ring when for $8 I can get a bag of 100 Buna or 40 Viton?
No brainer.
udflyer98 03-28-2006, 08:52 PM I like McMaster Carr because I can get all kinds of weird fasteners to use on my antique machinery that I can't run down to the local hardware store for. Plus, they usually offer a selection of coatings or uncoated so that I don't have to spend time stripping the zinc plating off of fasteners that need to be painted to look correct.
