I have read in several posts that the Allison locks and unlocks in certain gears. With the understanding that the only stupid question is a question that goes unasked - exactly what does it mean when the transmission locks? With the Attitude what is the advantage of defueling at shift points - does it have something to do with enabling the transmission to lock?

I believe the lock you are referring to is the torque converter locking. For example when in the tow/haul mode the torque converter will stay locked for a longer period of time enhancing fuel mileage and reducing heat. When the TC locks there is no slippage between the fly wheel and the trans....sorta like direct drive.
on edit: I don't know anything about the defueling feature of the power adder you mentioned. A guess would be to avoid excessive slippage that can damage clutch discs and possibly trigger the limp mode function of the trans....just a guess though.

Refferance to lock is the Torque converter ....
Defueling the shift is during the actual shift fuel (power) is cut back during the clutch pack exchanges to minimize slip ...
