Mac... you are a true poet... I like it.
Abuse is on the Loose
My Duramax days number... one
Although my Isuzu was fast and furious
It's time for some new fun
With a Japanese engine and a German fuel system
The Dmax made headlines
But something was missin
Dodge stepped up with a 600 torque blow
Said NO to rice in Mexico

Topgas 04-01-2004, 08:00 PM Are we sure hoot didn't get hit off the top of the head by one of those trees in his yard? I think he just smoked us bad......
Got it all stripped tonight. Truck is back to stock except for the wheels, tires, ventvisors, mudflaps.
Maybe some should hit me in the head.
Once this is done... I'll have a few things for sale that I can't use. Dodge dealer said I can hit the parts dept. for any accessories at cost. I think I'll grab their tonneau cover. Got the bedliner free.
Nobody at work knows. Come Monday some won't even notice cause it's the same color. Edited by: hoot

how much did you get for the d/max
It looked as if the threshold was right about where Kelly Blue Book put my truck for trade in value. Around 21,000
I had three dealers appraise it.
1) 19,500 but would do 21,000 if I made the deal
2) 18,000
3) 21,000
I bought from the third dealer because even though they did not have a truck for me, the guy gave me 21,000 no questions for mine and he found just about the exact truck I was looking for only 50 miles away.
Then they screwed up and gave me $3500 rebate when it really is only $2500 so they ended up giving me 22,000 for my truck.
Strange thing about where they found my truck. It came out of Allentown, Pa. The dealer it came from is not listed on the Dodge site. That confused me because I used the Dodge site inventory search and did not find this truck. Must be a broker. I have the dealer invoice in hand.
sprintmod1 04-02-2004, 12:17 PM Hoot, I am in Allentown, which dealer did the truck come from and I might be able to give you some insight as to maybe what happened from up here.
I just found out... Rothrock. They don't come up through Dodge.com but have their own site.
sprintmod1 04-02-2004, 01:40 PM They are getting to be a very big Dodge/Nissan dealership; they have been expanding very rapidly recently; I have not been able to get a true clear story from the top there but word has it that they are "brokering" trucks and cars to other dealerships from their lot. They are a full Dodge dealership and there are alot of cars and trucks there but they now (last 6 months) expanded their lot and there are hundreds of cars and trucks back there that have their name on the window for delivery and it's sitting there but you can not buy that vehicle and a few days later it seems to just "disappear". (One of my friends was looking at a Cummins and the salesman did not even acknowledge that that truck even existed much less had Rothrocks name on the window sticker). Word has it that they have been able to significantly up their allotment and then they are "dealer" trading them to others for sale. When I hear more about it, I will let you know. But that is probably what happened with your truck; probably was not even on Rothrock's site available for sale to you. But if it's what you were looking for, happy that you got it.
Rattlewagon 04-02-2004, 11:20 PM Hoot, can I have your plate??? Just kidding, I've heard the Cummins is a heck of a engine an the Dodge is a nice truck, good luck buddy!
zsqure 04-03-2004, 04:50 PM Hoot, I almost bought a dodge in '02 I love that motor, We have 2 beaters with the cumalong in them and they are rock solid. The trucks? Let us know how your truck holds up. I won't pick fun or anything, Dodge has some good styling gurus.
zsqure 04-03-2004, 04:56 PM Oh yea another thing, my old '02 had a set of injectors put in it last week, 57000 mi. Diesel in the crankcase so the parts swapper swapped out the parts.
The dealer screwed up. They told me it was a 600 but I had the VIN checked. It's the HO. 305/555
I told them to keep it.
Got them to drop the price 500 more and give me a tonneau cover.
The license plates are locked for five years or i would give it to the first asker. Nothing I can do about it.
Here's the pic again

OC_DMAX 04-03-2004, 08:02 PM Judging by what I have read on TDR and other places, you might be better off with what you got (305/555). Looks like the mileage is down on the newer 600 model.
TheTruth 04-03-2004, 08:08 PM Hey hoot,
Did the dealer have any issues with your truck being nearly totalled, the lifted heads/headgaskets blown and the rod knock you told us all about? I would think they would have taken a tad off the trade in value knowing all that, wouldn't you? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

The dealer has every option available to investigate a trade in such as vin number search and complete inspection prior to accepting a trade .... You act or suggest like it was totaled and or a salvage titled vehicle ... Paint, sheet metal, plastic damage means nothing along with vehicle being properly repaired under warranty...
Do you volunteer ever dollar you receive to the federal government ??

flhrciblueice 04-03-2004, 08:45 PM Hoot, that truck looks a little short.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif Good luck with it. We have a couple of Cummins engines at the fire station and they are rock solid. My father had one for quite a few years also. They are pretty tough. I looked at the dodges when looking for my new truck. I just didn't think the Quad cab would be enough room once my kid(s) got older as we are a tall bunch of people. That was the only real problem that kept me from looking at them more seriously.
Topgas 04-03-2004, 08:47 PM I guess it's for real!! Well at least Hoot can fill us in on what his new ride is compared with ours. I've been very interested in the 600, horsepower is what makes me buy a certain brand truck. Good for you Hoot, wish you the best. Please hang out here and fill us in from time to time.
duramaxdiesel 04-03-2004, 08:51 PM I'm gone for two days and come back to this!! Hoot, buddy, why man?? I'm at a loss of wordshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Hope you enjoy your new ridehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Burner 04-03-2004, 09:15 PM Why?........... Why not the Max again? I thought that the MPG "dropping" on a new 04 Cummins would keep you @ GM?
.......... Why?

Everybody has really been decent with me over and I appreciate it. OC_DMAX is right and I noticed too that they aren't getting good mileage on the 600. My HO feels real good. I'm not that particular. This thing specs 305/555. They do take a long time to break in though.
Don't anybody look at my me and think I know something you don't know. I just wanted to try a Dodge... brother has one and has had good luck with it. Since they quieted down the beast, it made a difference. I like a noisy diesel but the older ones were way too loud for me. I'm not going to sit here and brag mines better than yours cause first of all, I just got it and secondly, I've made too many friends around here. I may break this rule a little but hopefully no one will get offended by it.
One fellow used to post all the time with his Dmax. He went Cummins and hardly posts around here at all. I'll be around. I don't see me going too crazy with aftermarket on this one. Wife has her fist up http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif
It is or feels like a smaller truck. Turning radius seems better. It's much easier to get into a parking space.
Duke, they never asked me one question about the trade. Notta... nothing. They drove it around and looked it over. Everythinh was on it including the plow accessories (not the plow itself) Juice was on it, gauges. After I made the deal the salesman allowed me to take off anything I wanted. Needless to say there was just enough left to drive it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Seriously, I took all the aftermarket stuff off except the wheels and tires. The wheels were too pitted to be worth anything. I love you too. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Heart.gif How about a good word buddy. Or aren't you my best friend anymore?Edited by: hoot
tmg115 04-04-2004, 03:26 AM Well i think i am in hoots boat. i am starting to look at dodge for my next truck. i like that new 600. i am planing on buying a new one in a year or two. if chevy gets a higher output engine or a six speed alli i may look at them but untill then dodge looks like the winner right now.
Victory Red 04-04-2004, 10:18 AM Nooo Hoot say it isn't so the path to the dark side leads to tranny problems and ring gear replacements.
I hope it treats you well. This is America we get to drive what we want and where we want.
Mackin 04-04-2004, 10:40 AM What did HOOT do with the VRstraps ???
Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
I took the straps off. Poolrebel gets them. Trust me... nothing was left on the truck that I installed except for the wheels and tires, ventshades, mudflaps and air cleaner.
Been driving it for 2 days now. Nothing wrong yet and no parts have fallen off.
ROBZUK 04-04-2004, 04:50 PM When I was looking I test drove the Cummins and Powersmoke. I didn't like the noise the Cummins made and I still don't like the way a FERD drives. It feels wishy washy. Good luck with the new ride HOOT, I'll be out there picking up the pieces that fall off to sell on Ebay to fund my new BUCKSTOP bumper. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Burner 04-05-2004, 07:38 PM Hoot, how do ya like that full Hydra-formed frame? Is the frame as strong or stronger than the D-max frame? Buddy of mine works on the Dodge, he said that they had 12 come in for "new" transmissions. I don't know exactly what the problem was but he said something about the check valve being installed backwards, toasting the trans.
Question..... since you have the same axel as the D-max, which fluid will you use? Does Dodge use the same Texaco stuff as GM in the American Axel? I'd really like to know the skinny on that. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Let's here about "new" MPG....what could it be?
Burner----------> http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
I have no idea if the frame is stronger. It's not as tall as the GM frame in the back but it's fully boxed.
I'm not concerned about the trans at all. 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty and if I have to do anything major out of warranty the cost isn't astronomical. I can't predict the future. Right now it feels great.
I'll be using RedLine in the rear.
ROBZUK I agree on the noise from the engine. I was starting to get heavy on the peddle. This is a crude powerplant. The Dmax was smooth as glass. This one feels like a coffee grinder.
At 400 miles I'm hittin 18.1 mpg around town. I expect to be easy in the 20 avg once it's fully broken in.
As a whole the truck feels real good, just not as refined, drivetrain wise, as the GMC was.
Picked up the chrome air deflector and ventshades today. Gotta get mudflaps too...
OOPs forgot... ordered a 4" muffler replacement pipe for $38
Max Power 04-05-2004, 10:40 PM The thing that I HATE about the dodge frame is it is a royal pain in the A$$ to install a fifth wheel hitch on.
Rattlewagon 04-05-2004, 11:07 PM Hoot, I thought for the longest time I would be driving a PowerStroke until I drove a six liter(wanted a 7.3), then I drove my truck, an 03 base Dmax six speed. I never had a chance to drive a Dodge because none of the dealers had a manual trans. which is a requirement. I love my truck like I did my last one but, if a Dodge would have had a six speed and drove an run like my Dmax, I could have went that way. Brand loyalty comes down to what that brand has to offer and what it's gonna cost you. I think your going to be happy.

please describe what "around town" means.
Around town to me is stoplight to stoplight and no more than 30 to 35 mph.

I'm a little more liberal with around town.
Not long trips. I do drive 40 miles each way to work. I then drive around town when not driving to work.
