Can the Allison use a PTO? If so, do any of you actually use a PTO?

Occasionally I think it would be nice to have the option of running a device that had a compressor and generator on the same shaft.

With the high idle setting you could get usable stabilty for running an AC generator. There would be enough power available for a useful compressor.

The Ally can do it, but it wouldn't fit in our truck I don't think.

It for running stuff like dump, rollbacks, and tow bodies. I never seen a generator for a pto.

There is no space provided on the 2500/3500 for an install unless you're willing to cut a hole in your floor. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

I just spent some time tracking down some details, and it appears that the Allison used with the Duramax will no longer have the PTO driver gear included. Except when the PTO option is ordered -- but it is impossible to order the PTO option if you get a pickup bed.

The gas engine Allisons will have the PTO gear, as it is used as a timing gear for the gas PCM.

My truck was produced during the "cut over" week TPW Mar. 29, 2004, so it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell if my truck has the PTO drive or not, except by physical inspection of the delivered product! What a pain in the behind!

Yes, I think we talked on the phone today. I was thinking of getting rid of my 5KW Ruggerini Diesel generator and the 3.5 KW Generac in my camper and just running a RealPower, but not if the PTO gear is missing!

As for GM coming out with hybrid pickups, this has been all over the news for a long time. The current Forbes magazine has a summary of the upcoming hybrid cars and trucks. Both GM and Dodge will have hybrids this year. GM will also have a variable valvetrain V8 gas engine based on the old Olds rocker pad shift design (as opposed to the current variable phase camshaft in the 4.2 liter in-line 6 in the TrailBlazer, or the variable intake used in the ZR1 Corvette.)
