: Limited slip "slipping??
eds04max 03-30-2004, 11:23 PM Anybody else having problems with limited-slip "giving-up"?
I assume that the power upgrades are to blamehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif.I'm hoping to find an upgrade for rear-end to match engine w/o a total replacementhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif.
Symptom: I get single wheel-spin more and more often (this is not good for outrunning those mustangs!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif)
Am I the only one??http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Mackin 03-31-2004, 06:17 AM You didn't opt for the Eaton rear differential ??

problemchild 03-31-2004, 09:40 AM Mine does it too in a corner. If I turn a corner and gas it its one wheel burning. They have clutches so i guess they break loose.
1bad01 03-31-2004, 01:38 PM They are lockers, not limited slips.
TC Dmax 03-31-2004, 01:57 PM Doesn't it unlock when the rear wheels go above 20MPH?
Mackin 03-31-2004, 04:28 PM Doesn't it unlock when the rear wheels go above 20MPH?
Yes it is suppose to ....
I believe the Eaton is standard on the 3500 Dually it was on mine and optional on the 2500 and optional on the new 3500 single now ...

DMAX2DAMAX 03-31-2004, 04:38 PM How do I tell if I have the Eaton? My window sticker has "Locking Differential-Rear Axle" listed under options installed by manufacturer, is that an Eaton?
Mackin 03-31-2004, 04:44 PM Yes ... A Locker is an Eaton ...
Thought I was going to go tell you to lay a patch ,huh ??

eds04max 04-04-2004, 09:23 PM Mackin, guess I should have titled this "locker not locking?"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
So anyway, I've been out-of-town last few days and just got back.I do have the Eaton Locker. Anyone care to explain how the locker "locks" and "unlocks"(in non-scientific termshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif) and how I might help it to lock, even in a slight corner???
Michigana_Joe 04-04-2004, 09:35 PM Mine rarely locks. It usually will lock eventually, but only after it is way too late. By the time it locks the passenger side has spun so many times that it has zero traction and the driver's side just starts to spin as well. The end result is that the truck just starts going sideways...
I doubt there is anything you can do other than adding an air locker/ELocker type of device, but I'd sure like to know if there is...
Is this the same for everyone else, or is my locker not functioning correctly?
eds04max 04-04-2004, 09:44 PM When I had mild upgrades, I could be cornering in 2nd gear and get posi-trac wheel spin. But as I have increased the power, this has become a one wheel affair!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Broken Heart.gif
White Duramax 04-04-2004, 11:33 PM Mine always locks up right away, as soon as one starts to spin the other kicks in instantly. I have never left just one black stripe always twins and they always start together.

¨ Wheel speed difference (left to right) in excess of 100 RPM will cause a flyweight mechanism to open and catch a latching bracket.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
¨ The stopped flyweight will trigger a self-energizing clutch system, which results in the cam plate ramping against a side gear.
¨ Ramping increases until both axles turn at the same speed (full lock), which prevents further wheel slip.
¨ At speeds above 20MPH, the latching bracket swings away from the governor and prevents lockup from occurring.

</T>

GSXRTURBO1 04-05-2004, 10:45 AM If you are cornering, you will not get both wheels to spin. Why anyone would want to spin their tires while going around a corner is beyond me.
Also, if your truck is going sideways while accelerating in a straight line then your locking differential is working properly. The only way it can go sideways is if both tires are spinning, not just one. As mentioned, supposedly our locking differential will only work up to a certain speed, then after that it functions like an open carrier.
White Duramax 04-05-2004, 09:03 PM It seems like it stays locked longer than 20mph as I have burned out and made it shift into second and was still spinning both.
Amric 04-05-2004, 09:31 PM I think once it is locked, the torque being applied to the teeth will not allow it to unlock, until you take your foot out of the throttle.
GSXRTURBO1 04-06-2004, 08:28 AM Amric, that makes sense, I have the same experience as White Duramax
eds04max 04-09-2004, 09:55 PM flhrciblueice, thanks for the info.!! That is exactly what I was looking for.(now I have to find out why mine is not working!)
GSXRTURBO1, if my locker was 'locking', maybe I would not be spinning around those corners!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif..........also, I think the parallels in the rear-view are a pretty-good indication of posi-trac!
seriously though, lately I only get posi-trac if I start off straight. No prob. drag racing, but I can't "jump" into traffic without smoking the inside rearhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I'm wondering if I could "upgrade" those SELF-ENERGIZING CLUTCHS prev. mentionedhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
BTW, once locked, 20mph doesn't apply....as I have laid a set of posi's through all the gear's!!!!(when the truck shifted into 5th still spinning, I lifted....which was a mistake. Turbo "BARKED" 3 or 4 times at me!!) Needless to say, I won't be doing that anymore!!!
allstok03Dmax 04-10-2004, 01:28 PM yeah I had my turbo talk to me at the track the other day. I was doing a little burnout beside my friend that was about to race and I let out of it a little to fast and the turbo was definatly talkin to me. the crowd and the track officialls seemed to like it though.
