: John deere wont start
michaeljp86 03-12-2006, 10:37 PM Ok its a freinds tractor, jd 5500, always runs good. Every 5500 I ever seen or used was like this, no problems ever. It sat all winter and it started right up like always ran for 10 sec, put it in reverse, then it quit. Not a flat out quit like I shut it off but a slow sputter quit, like when your lawnmower runs out of gas. I checked the water seperator and it was fine, no water. Any thought on what might be the problem would be appreciated. I tried to start it again and nothing, it didnt even try to fire. My guess would be no fuel but Im not big into diesel problems since I never had any trouble with them yet.
Thanks alot.

It has likely just lost its prime. Have you tried plunging it??
I know that our 8440 would do the same thing. It would start and run a few seconds and then die. It was a PIA to get restarted without a second person priming while trying to start.
BREAK OUT THE EITHER!!!
good luck
That is why we have all red now!!! :joke:
Jperry 03-13-2006, 07:11 AM I am having the same problem with my 6300 deere. I am thinking mine is a weak fuel shutoff soleoid on the injector pump.

Stove, you want to fight, lol
I like JD but Im not going to knock a good tractor, most IH Ive seen are really nice but the JD always start in the cold. Im not a ford guy but they did make some good tractors also.
I have a question, how do I plung it? I never worked on a diesel before except oil change. If its the shut off solenoid I would think if you find it you could push it back and see if it runs, since this isnt my tractor I dont want to start ripping it apart. So jperry you'll have to find this out on your own. If I get the beast running Ill let you know what happened.
johnbron 03-13-2006, 09:20 AM First off, Make sure there is FUEL in the tank. Your description of it quitting is exactly what happens when the diesel runs out of fuel. I have always found it easier on the engine to start it with GAS fumes rather than ETHER. Soak a rag in gas and hold it in your hand next to the air breather intake source and squeeze a little to release fumes while cranking engine over. When engine starts move the rag away and if it starts to die move the rag closer for another whiff of fumes. Hold that rag tight or it may end up getting sucked into the intake. OOops!! I did that once on a ford diesel about 30 yars ago.

That's it lets rumble!! :joke:
We have loyality to no brand, just happens that we have majority red now. We used to have mostly WHITE's, in fact used to be kinda sponsered stock puller with a 2-180 white when I was a kid. We have a ford, kubota, white, and case on the farm.
Anyways, I am not sure specifically about your model, but there should be a round plunger that is screwed down. You have to unscrew it and then it will act as a primer. Same type of thing as priming a dmax after a filter change. It will likely take 2 people to make it work, one to pump the plunger, and one to crank it over. We normally prime for a couple of minutes, then start cranking the motor at about 1/2 throttle. We have had a few times this didn't work, mainly on the diesel refer trailer. In those cases we crack the closest injector line and pump until fuel comes out and close, and do that for all the lines.
Did I mention EITHER!!!! :joke:
good luck
michaeljp86 03-17-2006, 01:41 PM If anyone cares I looked up in the owners manual on how to prime the pump, I didnt try it yet though. There is a plug on the side of the IP you remove. Then on the top of the fuel filter is a hand pump. You turn key on, then pump till fuel come out of IP. Then you are good to go I guess. The little hand pump is pretty neat.
Wolford 03-20-2006, 10:05 PM Well did it crank?? You could have a weak fuel shut off soleniod.
michaeljp86 03-20-2006, 10:13 PM Did it crank, heck yeah it did. This guy pays me by the hour so Im not going over there to play with it until he asked me. I got to much on my plate right now to do it for free. If I find the problem Ill let everyone know what it was.
Jperry 03-21-2006, 07:03 AM Well I think I fixed my tractor yesterday. It was the fuel shutoff solenoid. The old one I took out came out in pieces and the cap was mushroomed out. This must be a common problem as EVERY JD dealership around me (about 5) had several in stock.
