: What's the weight of the stock 16" wheels with 245 tires
Man 'O War 03-12-2006, 11:15 AM I'm trying to determine how much heavier a Brentz 20" rim plus 33-34" tire would weigh compared to a stock GM 16" wheel with the 245-series road tire. If anyone has an extra stock wheel / tire (not mounted to their truck) and a scale at home, what's the weight of that combo? (Thanks in advance.)
GMCSLEHD 03-12-2006, 11:38 AM IIRC a stock PYO(aluminum) wheel and tire is 61lbs. The steel ones are a bit heavier.

Man 'O War 03-12-2006, 02:08 PM Thanks, Josh, for that info. It sounds like it's going to be hard to get close to, which means that GM chose a wheel that will give the truck the best acceleration, braking, and handling performance possible in exchange for roller skate poor looks.
It was amazed when I picked up a PY0 after the tire was dismounted. It felt very light. Just wish they made them a half inch wider.
Man 'O War 03-12-2006, 06:48 PM I image it is pretty light. The aftermarket for the Corvette Z06 (C5 model) is very strong yet there are just a couple of companies able to make a wheel that is actually lighter than the stock GM wheel,... for the Corvette. A lot of guys, me included, want larger wheels/tires to make the truck look better, but almost anything we do to the rig will make the acceleration / braking / handling worse. Maybe I should offset it with a Banks or Predator or Hypertech or something.
RickDLance 03-12-2006, 07:04 PM The Chrome covered steel wheels are a lot heavier. Just the wheel alone is 33. The Bridgestone site shows the tire at 41 pounds. Thats 74 total.
Man 'O War 03-12-2006, 08:21 PM Yeah, steel is heavy. The 19.5" wheels on Rickson's website have the steel wheels listed at 60-63# each and their forged aluminum wheels at 32-35# each. Granted, that is a larger wheel than the 16" GM wheel.
Question: My '05 LLY has the Bridgestone V-Steel 245/75x16 tires. Is this almost as good as the Michelin XPS Rib?
After a ton of consideration for 20" wheels / 33-34" tires and a 2-3" body lift, I'm thinking of forgetting all that and just running a set of XPS Ribs and a power programmer.
Duromax04 03-12-2006, 10:50 PM The stock tires that come on these trucks most assuredly is not of the quality of the XPS tires. They put them on there because they sold them to GM at the price point that GM demanded and they meet the weight carrying requirements. The XPS are much stronger and longer wearing.
If you are determined to go bigger wheels and tires, then you really need to go all the way with it, and put lower gears in the diffs. That will give you your mechanical advantage back that you lost by going to the bigger tires. Now on the brake side, you need to step up to bigger rotors and calipers to slow the thing down. Of course by the time you do that, you will have 25% of what the truck is worth or more in the mods.

14-15lbs to be exact. I weighed one the other day after feeling how light they were compared to my aftermarkets. My aftermarkets are around 25 lbs.
WorkTruck 03-14-2006, 07:19 PM Just weighed one of mine, 32 lbs for the stock steel 2500HD wheel.
Man 'O War 03-15-2006, 10:16 PM Thanks, guys, for all the measurements! The lightweight stock aluminum wheels are going to be hard to beat for what they are. I think I'm going to stick a set of Michelin XPS Ribs on them and be done with that round of modifications. Who knows,... maybe later down the road I'll do a lift with 35" tires, but for now, after hours and weeks of thinking about it, I'll stick it out with the GM 16" rims and XPS Ribs.
JasonsDMax 03-31-2006, 07:54 PM I just pulled a stock PYO polished aluminum wheel/tire off my new 06 and weighed it on an electronic scales. The wheel and tire weighed exactly 57.0 lbs.
