: Noobie, best mods?

Obviously exhaust, intake, and a chip are the first 3 places to start (unless I'm wrong?). So steer me in the direction as far as which brands/models are the most popular/highest gains. Also what other mods are popular that yield good gains?

This is my first diesel, so steer me in the right direction. Picking up my 04 in the morning. Will post pictures later in the afternoon...

Thanks guys,

Chuck

Chuck.. Your going to have a LLY Motor so the chips are not available for it yet.

Alright cool, what about exhaust? I want to do a full system that's from the turbo back. And I assume the AFE stage II is the way to go intake wise? Do the ones for 01-02 fit 04's?

Thanks

All of the Dmax exhaust systems will fit your truck regardless of LB7 or LLY, the hangers are the same. However, the AFE Stage II will not fit an LLY motor. They are currently working on one, but are way behind on several other things so it won't be out for a while. If we can help you with anything, let me know.

Go with the Banks Monster Exhaust or JK's.

I read somewhere that the downpipes on the LLY's were different than the LB7's because they have a different turbo, is this true?

Thanks

I would highly recommend the Monster Exhaust from Banks. The highest quality I have seen so far, with a nice deep tone. The sound isn't too intrusive. Just my opinion.

I think the Banks exhaust is the best I've heard! I've heard straight-pipe, too loud. I have a Flowmaster muffler, a little drone, and on some days it sounds weird (probably the motor or the driver, not the exhaust)...

My personal opinion is best mod is Bilstein shocks - above the Edge! (Edge is second though...).

I have Jegs 4' ss exhaust. For $500 you can't beat it IMHO.

Nope, the down pipe is the same, even if you have a converter. The pipe LOOKS a ton different because of the bends it took to put the converter in, but the pipe from an LB7 slides in there like a champ. Bye bye kitty..

banks exhaust is the way to go.

Hey fishhog... is that 353HP correct? I thought that a Duramax was 300HP stock and just a chip will add over 100+ HP? I see you have a chip AND exhaust... why are you only 53HP over stock?

Because the HP tests are done on a dynamometer which is measured at the rear wheels. A stock duramax will dyno around 230-240 hp at the rear wheels. So in reality he is likely about 110 ish over stock.

Are the tranny problems fixed on the 04 models, as far as having to upgrade w/ increased power? If not, what mods are pretty much the limit before having to upgrade? And what mods need to be done to the tranny to help it handle the power? I read a lot of people talking about convertors. Are we talking about torque convertors? If so, I know this is a dumb question, but why would that effect the power the tranny can handle?

Thanks

Where's the best place to order the Banks system, and why do you think Bilstein's are the best mod, Joe E? What kind of improvments did you notice?

Thanks

Mods......

High idle, All Lights on (resistor solder), 100w back up lights, XM radio, no door chime, nicktane filter......

Thats what I would do.

In my opinion, they just simply transform the handling of the truck from a waffling bean-bag of a ride to a firm controlled ride, almost sports-car like. I went 35k w/ stock shocks (one was bad when I removed them), and I can honestly say the truck is just more enjoyable to drive from a handling standpoint. It is a little firmer, and on some roads it is fairly evident how much firmer they are, but overall I wouldn't trade them for stock, no matter what. I even considered putting them on my wife's minivan!!! There's been quite a few posts on here, you can search to get other's opinions too...

Cool, thanks Joe.

Here's the pics of my new rig. Needs some 285/70's, window tint, and a spray in bedliner. Then I'll order the banks exhuast. Can't wait for the Edge to come out for the 04 models.
