03 CHEVY 2500 HD D/A BANKS SIX GUN WITH SPEED LOADER. Hello folks I am running michelin LTX m/s 285's on stock aluminum wheels they are rated D (approx 3300 lbs at 65 psi). The rim is 6.5 ins (I think) wide and that tire is rated for 7.5 to 9 inch rim. I have the front inflated to 55 psi and rear to 50 psi. The tire seems to not be making contact on edges( dome shaped). I probably should have got the michelin ltx 265 E rated tires. I only have about 1000 miles on these tires so what should I do. Does any one have experience running 285's on stock rims? I feel like the tire salesman should have told me they were too wide. Are there any safety issues(I tow a 6000 lb boat infrequently about 60 miles round trip). Thanks in advance!

A lot of folks run 285's on the stock PYO's, but they are too wide. Hard to say if you reduce your capacity or if you have a safety issue, my bet is the tire manufacturer would say yes. 265's are a better choice, load range E's rated at 3400 lbs. You will crown the tires. You could always get some 8" wide rims if you like the 285's. And yes the salesman should have told you so.

I've been running 285's on stock rims for about 25K now, and I'm just now starting to see some additional wear in the center of the tires. I'm using 40-45 lbs of air pressure (when empty/not towing), so that might be part of the reason too.

Realistically, they're a bit too wide for the 6.5" rims, but unless you run at, or near, their limit fairly often you should be okay.

I appreciate the input but I decided to change to 16x9 rims costing me $700 for the set. The reason being that these michelins are expensive and Iwould hate to ruin them.

Probably a good idea. I just put a set of 265/75/R16E Nittos on my factory 16x6.5" rims and I think that is even pushing it a bit. I am running 55lbs in the front and 45lbs in the rear and the tread seems to make good contact. Technically these tires should have at least a 7" wide rim. Edited by: Chevyfreek

I am running 55lbs in the front and 45lbs in the rear and the treat seems to make good contact. Technically these tires should have at least a 7" wide rim. Thank you! Since I am going to have 9inch rims I cannot resist the temptation to go for BF goodrich 315's. I will save the michelins for long highway drives. I guess I have spent a lot of benjamins but I probably will not need tires for 2-3 yrs.
