Bought a 2002 Chevy 8.1L w/Allison last summer. Was thinking of changing the trans fluid, +add bigger cooler, I'm at 25k and temps are a tad high when towing by the OEM temp gauge. (over 200+). Would a synth fluid help temps over Dexron lll, is Dexron lll a synth? what color is Dexron lll? Stuff in there now is purple in color w/very little aroma. (not like the stinky red stuff I remember that could eat paint). Amsoil OK? or stick with Allison Qualified 295 Fluids.:chevy:

Transynd, Mobil1, Amsoil and Mike L. uses Citgo Quatra (something or other) Syn are the most popular choices for syn. Dex III is not Syn. If you check the thread called Fluid change it has a link to the "do it yourself flush. Also Mike L. has a great aftermaket cooler. Its plug and play - unbolt the old and hook up the new. No adapting, no cutting and works great. I put it on last year and it made a noticable difference in my temps towing. Mike doesn't have a web site but he's in the vendor list and you can call his trnny shop for info. If your in So Cal or close he will even install for you although it is not bad to do.....Bill

I also changed to a deep pan when I added the cooler and went syn. I don't think the deep pan really does anything for cooling but it does add extra capacity ( about 3 quarts ) to the trans. If your interested in that Eric sells a deep pan kit. (see Eric in my sig )
